Can someone refresh my memory...
In the time it took for this issue to come to the forefront...were any other alternatives explored and given serious consideration other than referring to a singular person using a pronoun that literally means MORE THAN ONE person? There has got to be another alternative that makes actual sense.
Am I the asshole and just being closed-minded here? Even though I make an effort to do this (using of the preferred pronoun) because I get the reason why, and I want to be respectful of who someone is, "They" are NOT two people. I think "they" (when referring to one person) is part of the reason why THEY are not given the respect they should be. I will never not think it's dumb to refer to a single person using a plural pronoun.
And it opens things up to confusion lingusitically, with the above being a prime example of this.

I thought using xe was mentioned at some point, but I guess it didn't catch on.

I trip up, too, but never on purpose. What frustrates me is that 99% of the time I say the correct pronouns (or instantly catch myself) and 100% of the time I am trying to say the correct pronouns. But in that little 1% frame, someone (online) will lose their mind and say I'm misgendering someone. I have seen it happen to friends, also. I know those people policing these sorts of slips ups are just obnoxious, and I ignore them, but I'm sure their doing that doesn't help the situation either.
When I was working in child welfare, the receptionist and I were discussing one of the kids who was, at the time, transitioning. The receptionist kept calling the child by the wrong pronouns and I politely said, "[Sarah] goes by she." This half-brained bint haughtily told me, "Oh no, I've talked on the phone with him. He knows he's a he," and pranced off. I never expected to hear that kind of bullshit at a social welfare agency...and not only did it mean that the receptionist was an idiot and a bigot, it also meant that instead of directing that child's phone calls to the case worker or therapist, she was telling the kid god knows fucking what which needless to say is not allowed.
Anyway, that's setting the bar low, but I think normal people know when someone makes a mistake and when someone is intentionally being a jackass.

There have been a few xe, ze, hir -- there may be others I don't remember. I looked this up a few years ago when this issue was really bugging the grammar police in me and I couldn't believe no one thought of this. They did, but none caught on.

I think the one pronoun, in English, that gets me is "it". Some people prefer to be referred to with "it" pronouns and to my native English-language ears, it sounds demeaning and dehumanizing. It's not that I wouldn't respect it, it's that it sounds hurtful to me. I think even here at GR, some of us have used "it" to describe particularly vile celebrities. I mean I feel like I've done that before.
At the same time, I'm perfectly OK with "il" in French meaning "he" or "it". I guess the difference is that in English we have a distinction between the two words.

^ it's the same in German actually. Three pronouns - female sie, male, er, and neutral es. But you would never say "es" to a person. Exactly as you said, it's demeaning ad dehumanising. Es is a thing. We have no solution to neutral gender as of yet. Two people I talked / wrote to that prefer gender neutral pronouns prefer other people to just not use a pronoun in German. So instead you use their name, it's kind of easy actually and I'm 100% sure the whole Ezra article would have been so much easier to read if they would have used "Ezra" instead of they at least in half of their sentences.

I know it would have been easier for me to read in my own sentences up thread! I confused myself with my own sentence. I was trying to remember the deal with German. I knew sie, er, und es and what they were used for, but was wondering if German-speaker do adopt es. It makes sense that they don't. I know very few people who prefer it exclusively, and most of those people are online, so I've never had to say it out loud to anyone yet.

So are they going to arrest this asshole or what? Are they holed up in Vermont and that's why they can't serve them? I don't understand this. VultureI wanted to post the original article from Rolling Stone, but I don't have access to it. I really am sorry I ever complimented this piece of excrement on their fashion choices.

OMG, I used to ‘long’ for threads on Ezra Miller because I found their style so interesting, now every time this one pops up I’m like “what the fuck did they do now?” And sadly they never disappoint. This went from kinda creepy to downright psychopathy.
I feel so sorry for the victims, and at the same time somewhat glad that if they come out now we will believed them, not sure it would have been the case a few years ago. (Trying to see some kind of silver lining here)

Yeah, I thought they were just plain old "troubled"...not full-on needing to be locked up 24/7.

Apparently the police have caught up with Miller in Vermont and they have been charged with Felony Burglary. However it sounds like Miller has been released with just a citation to appear in Court 26th September. I wonder if they'll show up? Personally - and bearing in mind the trail of chaos, destruction and multiple arrests they have left in their wake so far - I think they should have been slammed in jail until their appearance as they do seem to be a flight risk, as well as a danger to others.
