I'm actually not going to bitch about the weather... we finally got a proper snow in northern IL! It's not much, but the ground is covered and the trees look pretty. About damn time.

My weather rant: Our weather totally sucks worse than usual. And I don't mean lots of freezing cold and snow, although when we do get a cold spell it's sudden and bitter cold. We've barely gotten snow, even though we've had enough of a fall to cause the usual stupid emptying of the stores and the closing up of shit for a day and people flipping out for no reason, as the damn freeze has usually come on so fast that the ground isn't even cold enough for any of that shit to stick on the road. But it's the south, so you'd think we were gonna die or starve to death trapped in our homes the way people react. Why people are not more scared of tornadoes here than a half inch of snow or ice that won't even stick is beyond me. It's the sudden and extreme changes in temp and pressure that are getting dangerous here. My sinus hate it for one. And it annoys me especially because every time we get a polar vortex or an abrupt cold front every dumbass on Fakebook makes with the idiotic "So much for your global warming!" comments. In reality, despite the abrupt cold fronts overall it's been an extremely mild winter here. It's been up to almost 70 degrees at many points throughout the last couple months. Having to go from using your heat to your AC and back sucks. Sudden cold fronts bumping up against warm fronts and pressure changes result in shit like tornadoes. This is EXACTLY global warming/climate change, produce more of this type of shit ass weather that makes everyone way sicker than just straight cold. I'd love a nice long cold winter with a good snow. As long as I have power: I wanna be trapped in my house for a week. We will have this mild as fuck shit all winter, then think we're headed into spring by March but before that happens we could actually get a damn polar vortex and a dumping of snow (or more likely ice/snow mix) at any time until about April. Then it will be hot as balls here for about 8 months. That's what pisses me off. I have to deal with enough hot swamp ass weather here for most of the year that I'd like to actually be able to enjoy winter when it comes. But it starting to suck more every year. Also: I've noticed here in the South they actually are starting to be a little more afraid of thunderstorms and tornadoes than before, because I've noticed that even severe, but non-snow/ice/cold weather on the horizon will actually cause schools to close early, start late or even cause for a WHOLE day. Which totally disrupts work for everyone because all the people with kids have to scramble to retrieve them or even be out because they have nowhere for their kids to be if school suddenly is dismissed. The last time they did this shit, the severe weather everyone was hunkered down and home with their kids waiting for dissipated by the time it got to us. Sorry, but when I was a kid a thunderstorm or even a tornado wasn't getting you out of school. I would think it'd be actually safer in a school building (lined up in the inside hall like they used to do with us) than in a suburban cracker box house (or even a trailer in some cases, as you got plenty of people living in those). But nowadays these schools probably don't want the liability of anything happening to the snowflakes while on their property. But are perfectly fine with whatever is gonna happen to them with parents trying to get off work to retrieve them so they can hole up in their less safe personal residences

Portland was hit with 10.8 inches of snow on Wed night / Thurs morning. As per usual traffic was a nightmare with city busses stranded, school busses taking 5+ hours to get home (those poor drivers deserve a raise!), some people with commute times of 10 hours. It was the 2nd most snowfall ever recorded. All schools everywhere cancelled. The National Weather Svcs had predicted maybe a dusting of snow on Wednesday morning. We got 2-3" where I live as we are further south. I-5 was completely closed. For your entertainment: www.reddit.com/r/Portland/comments/11akutn/hwy26west_bound_thursday_am_looks_like_zombie/ (this is one of 3 major highways out of Portland city center) www.reddit.com/r/Portland/comments/11aro1e/trucks_are_better_in_snow/ (actually would be terrifying b/c they are on a major bridge over the Willamette River, I'd be freaking out)

Today it was mid-50s (typically mid to upper 30s this time of year), we had a ton of rain and there were tornadoes spotted in the western suburbs of Chicago. There were tornadoes in Oklahoma today too -- also unusual even though they can get a lot of twisters. Over the weekend there was snow in southern California.
Dolem mentioned the big snow in Portland.
But there are people who will simply not believe this means anything. We've done such damage to our planet. Things have changed so much in my lifetime. Weather used to be much more consistent in the seasons. There would be some freak weather events, but it seems like they are occurring more and more. I know I've mentioned this before, but it is such a concern for me.

^^ I know, right? This has been the strangest winter in the Chicago area that I can remember. Loud thunder woke us up early AM and scared the crap out of the dogs. Slept through the rain and then woke up again to tornado warnings and temps in the 50s. Nothing really came of the tornado warnings, not here anyway. All we got was light rain in the afternoon.
Pretty strange when CA gets snow and we don't. I agree the weather has changed a lot from when I was younger. I have a January birthday and so many birthday dinners had to be postponed due to snow and below zero temps. For weeks at a time. Now I rarely have to grab the heavy coat and boots to go out.

My birthday is in January too and it was always really cold and snowy. Typically, the week after my birthday would be a horrible deep freeze.

It rained like a fucking hurricane here yesterday (Detroit area). Not cold enough to freeze over, but a LOT of rain. And really just dark all day.

It has been summer hot here in key largo. High 80’s. It’s ridiculous for February, even here.

Texas is like a rollercoaster. 90 one day, 43 the next. Today we're having thunderstorms. I'm sure tomorrow will be like summer.

We were supposed to get 6-10 inches of snow today, as predicted early in the week. Yesterday the predictions were from 1-3, 3-5, 6-10 depending on what weather you looked at. This morning they were saying a possible wintery mix with less than an inch of slush accumulation. Guess what? We got nothing. Not even a drop of rain.
I swear back in the day they wouldn't talk about possible snowstorms like this and a day or so before you might hear about a storm coming. Midwest weather has always been unpredictable. I feel like it's gotten even more unpredictable the last several years and forecasting has upped their game trying to be the first to declare impending disaster of - gasp - a few inches of snow. To me, unless it is way below zero or dumping 8+ inches on us, it's not a big deal. It's winter. Stop the drama. They all look like a bunch of fools.
End of old lady weather rant.
