Central TX, 58 yesterday a.m., down to low 20’s by the afternoon, and 11 overnight. It won’t go above 25 today. Heat pump is struggling and cold water pipes are frozen, so zero cold water, but hot water is working. Hopefully there won’t be leaks. We are planning to add more insulation in spring, houses here are not built for very cold temps but they are occurring every winter now. The weather shifts across the country are alarming.

They really are, as are all the extreme weather events across the globe. In many places summers are now way hotter and drier, for longer, than they used to be, and winters now have more frequent (previously rare) extreme cold snaps. Plus mega droughts everywhere. I guess it’s the new normal we are forced to adjust to.

I'm so excited that we're expected to have a low of 46F tonight! I might need to break out my pants and socks! Our condo shares walls on both sides so we are so well insulated we've never had to turn on the heat in 5 yrs. Today was 79 so I live for this "cold" weather.

Windy as hell here, and the temp on the way home (about an hour ago) was 2 degrees. Roads passable (most schools cancelled, and lots of companies had their people stay home), but slick.
And beeyotch - yo mama!

So far it's not too bad in my part of the UK after the cold snap we've just had but some forecasters are predicting that the temperatures are likely to nosedive again in the next week or so. I think they might be right as my cats have suddenly started trying to eat me out of house and home and they are usually a pretty good indicator of incoming bad weather.
Thankfully we're not expecting anything quite as crazy as the US is having, but it's still likely to be rough for a lot of people.

It's supposed to get down to 7F/-13C tonight and our furnace just went out. We are checking for emergency repair services but nobody so far can get here before tomorrow morning. Sheesh.

Eeck, hope you manage to stay warm!
Icy roads here, down to 20° last night with lots of wind and freezing rain. It's suppose to warm up overnight to 40° by noon and rain.
I can't complain, it looks so bad around the country. We are lucky to just have 2 rather inconvenient days of ice

Finally back to normal temps today, it’s getting up to 45. I’m about to run a couple of errands I couldn’t do yesterday and I’m just in a sweater.

So scrolling on fakebook I'm reading about a lot of folks having problems like pipes freezing, and some have dealt with loss of power. Partly from shitty grids/networks and partly now due to the fact that MLG&W (Memphis Light, Gas & Water across the state line from me) but also another company in MS that supplies power east of me have instituted a schedule of rolling blackouts (30min-2hrs blocks) to cope with overload.
In the south lots of these homes are not built to withstand the temps we've had the last day or so. Also, these stupidly oversized homes that they keep constructing in these bougie neighborhoods in the county keep popping up at light speed at a faster rate than the upgrading of the power grids.
One reason I'm glad I stuck it out in the "hood" (i.e. cheaper subdivision in the heart of the town) where I live. No outage here and as far as I can tell when I go to my energy provider site there is no blackout scheduled. My little 3br 2ba 2 car garage crackerbox is nice and toasty. Let me knock on wood now!
I have kept all my faucets dripping and the cabinets open underneath just to be on the safe side. And Jr and I put styrofoam covers over the outdoor spigots last month before the first freeze.
Our work affiliate office in MS (around the corner from the hospital) was closed yesterday due to the weather so we took our laptop and work phones home the day before in anticipation of this and they let us work from home! It worked out great. And it was awesome to do my job in my jammies at my kitchen table all day. Now I have the next 3 days off. Going to try and get out today cause I know the roads aren't that bad and it's at least sunny today even if it's now still 19 degrees. (it was 1 last night!)
But yeah all my friends and peers who live in these bougie ass county subdivisions are dealing with bullshit. The ones without the foresight to have generators. Lemme tell ya, if I lived in one of these areas I would definitely own one!

Eeck, hope you manage to stay warm! Thanks! Here's how it went:
1. Mrs Mo slept in our bedroom with a space heater on. It was fine in there.
2. Our son had his gf in his room until midnight. But he also has a gaming PC and a projector running in there, so I'm not sure he would ever notice a difference in temperature.
3. Our daughter was in her room and felt a little cold, but she runs really hot at night, so it was not an ordeal.
4. I slept on the couch in our family room with a space heater on nearby. With our beloved Bleu sleeping next to me all night. The plan was that I was going to stay there so I could check faucets and keep pipes from freezing over.
Technician showed up at 10:30 am and got the furnace working by 11. Mrs Mo's friend had dropped off 4 extra space heaters by then. It was like "It's a Wonderful Life" except with BTU's instead of money!

Iowa here. I don't know what the temp is other than fucking cold and it's windy as fuck. I was supposed to have a work appt this morning. They cancelled. Yea me! I have no plans to leave the house til Tuesday, and I'm just going to keep putting wood in the fireplace. I am in Iowa as well. Merry Christmas to us, it was 14 degrees today!

Glad you were able to stay warm and the tech got there!
It's a balmy 20 here today... which is normal for this time of year, so that's good.
