Rant: Neighbor who cut down our tree last summer (I know right?!?) has been trying to get their van (which they NEVER use) running. For the past three hours the muffler-less 1995-era van has been started and stopped (and the horn blows three times with each start) trying to keep it running (sorry if you're friends on FB because I bitched over there). Imma 'bout to lose my mind up in here.
Rave: Good dinner.

you could have stopped at cut down your tree, or any tree. people who cut down trees and don't give a shit are like people who don't like animals - automatically sus. i worry every time a storm takes out a branch on the big tree in front of my house, and i'd be devastated if it died.

^ we have a really, really old apple tree in the garden, and I think it's going to be the last season for it. We say that since a couple of years now, it is almost hollow and has some kind of funghi, we had to get rid of big branches that got too heavy, but it still makes some small branches and had beautiful flowers last year, but I think that was it now. I'm going to be so sad, I hope our landlord will provide a new tree.

Growing up we had this huge apple tree in our backyard. Ridiculously huge for an apple tree. The blossoms in the spring were amazing. My mom loved that tree so much that the trunk was held together with a chain after it was damaged in a storm. When we finally did have to cut it down my entire family was so sad.

^ one of our neighbours' brother is a gardener, he did everything he could to secure the tree. Not chains, but lots or ropes, one rope is secured to our balcony so it gives double stability.

Bit of a rant and an apology in advance. If you are using the board on your phone in desktop mode you can sometimes hit the LOL reaction rather than Like, so if I've accidentally inappropriately LOLed on anyone's serious posts then I'm sorry. I have fat fingers.

I love that you named the new one Natasha to go with Boris. Funny pet names crack me up, I love them. It was honestly the best part of my job at the spay/neuter clinic, hearing what pet names people come up with. We used to have a pair of finches named Morticia & Gomez.

Rave: Blast from the past. I found my original 1980 first edition of The Official Preppy Handbook while I was looking for a different book last night. I’m going to give it a read.

This Rant/Rave tells a story that takes place over the course of one day (yesterday):
Rave - yesterday morning, Mrs Mo and I completed a 3-hour drive out to Ocean City to pick up our son from beach week. We also picked up his gf and her best friend. We were ecstatic to find that all 18 of these kids - who had rented all three floors of a large beach house - had completed the week without getting sunburned, beaten up, or arrested (we've heard stories). The cleaning lady even complimented everyone on how clean they left everything. Huge formative experience for all of them, living a week on their own before they go off to college.
Rant - as we pulled out of the parking lot, our battery light came on - I looked it up and it said that it means the battery is not charging. At first, I thought it meant the battery was failing, and that we needed to keep the car running, so on the way back, we stopped at an AutoZone and put a brand new battery in. But after making a quick call to Honda, I found out that what was really happening was the alternator was failing. The Honda guy and the AutoZone guy both thought we had a pretty good chance of making it all the way back home before the battery died.
Rave - we made it all the way to our son's gf's house! We dropped the gf and her friend off there, talked with their parents briefly, and then headed out.
Rant - as soon as we pulled out of the driveway, the battery light came back on. Our home is only about 2 miles away, and we made it back there, but it was very clear the bad alternator and drained battery were getting worse almost by the minute.
Rave - at least Mrs Mo had time to go upstairs and get cleaned up for a wedding reception we were going to that evening
Rant - I had our son follow me as we drove to our trusted mechanic to drop off the car. I cannot tell you the stress I was under as EVERY SINGLE electric component began to turn off and back on. And as the automatic transmission refused to switch out of 3rd gear. Starting from a stop on the way to the mechanics was just unreal.
Rave - I made it into a parking space in the mechanic's parking lot, and signed in the car. It was so bad at that point, though, that I couldn't switch the car into reverse. J*sus.
Double Rave - I got back home and cleaned up, and we made it to the wedding reception only 30 minutes late (wedding ceremony was months ago in Florida). There was an open bar, filet mignon, crab cakes, dancing, and friends we hadn't seen in years.
Triple Rave - this morning, while Mrs Mo was sleeping in, I sneaked out and got the weekly groceries. I made her and our son omelets with provolone, sauteed portabella mushrooms, fried spring onions and cherry tomatoes. I brought back Hawaiian bagels for our daughter.

Rant: It’s too fucking hot 🥵. I was outside for an hour and a half earlier and didn’t realize how hot it was. Came inside and it took me about an hour to cool down! It’s going to be between 95-100 (no rain forecasted but hopefully this will change). We did put up our gazebo over the back patio which helps keep the house a smidge cooler without overworking the AC. But if no rain it means I’m out there 2-3x a day watering veggies and plants so I guess I just gotta stay hydrated.
I can tolerate the heat better than most people so when I say it’s too hot and feel I could pass out that’s serious heat.

I feel your "It's too fucking hot" rant, MsDark. Me too.
My rant is: my kid has Covid, dammit. Tested positive on a home test, dark line right away, so I'm sure the PCR we got will be positive. I've got sore throat symptoms because kid likes to cough right in my face, so I'm sure I have it too. I knew it was just a matter of time, but he got it the first damn week of camp.
So far his symptoms aren't that bad, and fever is easily controlled with tylenol/motrin.
