The Grey Man The book was fairly boring & way too long Chris Evans is dressed like a psycho from the start. I had to check to see if this was indeed based on that book - which was not good. And then Amazon let me know there's a whole series. I'm good, thanks.

I didn't think The Gray Man was so bad. Evans was chewing scenery though.

I didn't think The Gray Man was so bad. Evans was chewing scenery though. I liked Gosling in it - I don't think that I can recall actually seeing him before and Ana Thingy - loved her. I got books 1+2 as audio books and they were just tortouious. Yikes. It's like Hitler and Paul Snider from Star 80 (Dorothy Stratton's husband who murdered her) had a baby. Ah thank you! It was all psycho-polyester clothes + he's supposed to a rich? ETA - it was very different from the book but improved for that. The shooting scenes just went in forever, the baddies were cardboard cutouts of a baddy and stereotyped (boring!). I could have predicted the ending 5 mins in. Maybe I shouldn't watch films when I'm tired. I think I feel asleep at one point but didn't miss anything - they still seemed to be shooting at each other when I woke up .

Shakespeare in Love is supposed to be a light comedy, so the only thing I really compare to Elizabeth is that she appears in both movies at different stages in her life. The costumes were amazing in both movies - I honestly can't remember if they were super accurate for the time period, but they were beautiful.
I didn't hate The Gray Man but it wasn't great. I thought it was going to be a total shitfest, but it ended up being more tongue in cheek than I would have guessed, kind of like a spoof on early aughts spy/shoot em up movies. That said, the writing was pretty stale. Chris Evans is really chewing the scenery, and a lot of things and people get blown up and that's about it.

I didn't hate it. Kate Beckinsale knows how to play a shallow, charming, single-minded narcissist. LOL, that is true. I think I need to rewatch the movie because I know there was something I wasn't excited about, but it might just have been my mood that day. Nothing specific sticks out in my mind, so it's very possible. I love, love, love this movie. It's one of my go-to movies for when I'm feeling down. Kate Beckinsale does a brilliant job and the rest of the cast is great too. The scenes with Chloe Sevigny are particularly hilarious - both actresses are having so much fun. eta: Watched The Gray Man. It was okay - I think I wanted to like it more than I actually did.

Judi Dench as Elizabeth (older) was the best thing about Shakespeare In Love.

I didn't mind Behind Her Eyes, but I was using it as Ambien, so my opinion shouldn't be relied on too much. The Last Duel felt like a bunch of bro dudes got together and went, "Gee, what would it be like if a woman got raped?" and then in the most archaic way possible tried to answer that question without any amount of research or empathy, which I think is basically how that movie came to be. It could have gone so differently...But it didn't and here we are. Regarding the hair, I don't know what was worse, Matt's mullet or Ben's daffodil yellow hair. I was falling asleep when I saw this thread last night and I have learned not to post when I'm in that state, but I tried to throw Becoming Elizabeth on Starz to the mix. I haven't seen the latest episode, but fuck it's been so bad. It makes The Tudors look like a documentary. It's trying to be modern and rompy, but the main focus of the show is Thomas Seymour trying to bed 13-year-old Elizabeth and it's hard to juxtapose those two things. Katherine Parr is played by Jessica Raine from Call the Midwife and Wolf Hall (I don't think season 2 of that is ever going to happen) and I normally like her, but the writing is all over the place with the character. The entire show kind of goes from inappropriate to cheesy to sentimental to SERIOUS to sexy from one second to the next like they made a script out of spitballing. I constantly say someone needs to get their shit together in writing & producing the Plantagenet/Tudor shows. The documented history is interesting enough, there isn't a need to stretch, distort or completely re-write what happened.

I wish they would do one about Edward II/Piers Gaveston/Hugh Despenser/Isabella of France/Roger Mortimer/Edward III - that story is outrageous enough on its own, without having to rewrite history. The Dan Jones book "The Plantagenets" is like a (violent) soap opera with all its juicy shenanigans - it's Game of Thrones without dragons.

I read Stars is producing an Eleanor of Aquitaine show next. I’ll watch and be prepared to be meh about it. But yes, The She Wolf (hate that nickname) is another fascinating subject. So much history where an accurate and engaging show would be a hit. I feel they overall do such a poor job of wanting to draw women into these shoes and think we want all the unnecessary inaccuracies as long as they give us sex 🙄 I have actually never read Dan Jones. His books are never available on Kindle Unlimited and my local library doesn’t have them. I’m too cheap to buy them at retail. 🤣. I keep my eyes open at used bookstores but no luck yet. I have watched the series he’s been a part of. I loved Britain’s Bloodiest Dynasty. I like when he’s paired with Susannah Lipscomb. An older show from the late 70s, The Devil’s Crown is excellent. I should rewatch as it’s been awhile and I can’t remember how historically accurate it is. I watched on YouTube several years ago. The

Maybe one day I’ll finish it XD THAT DYNASTY IS A REAL LIFE SOAP OPERA and I’m here for it” I’d even be ok with a “romanticized” version of Mathilda and he marriages with Henry and later Geoffrey (did my Master’s thesis on her - more specifically on her depiction and gendering in religious chronicles - which is also why I studied medieval warfare) Just anything that isn’t freakin Anne Boleyn again 🤣🤣🤣

I would love to see one about John of Gaunt, because he had such a huge influence on history, for someone who was never actually king. Plus there's plenty of raunchiness and soap opera in his affair with Katharine Swynford to keep us ladies happy.

charmedhour I saw a documentary about Queen Anne the other week and it really uncovered how dirty they did her in the film The Favourite. Far from being the woolly head buffoon the film portrayed she was actually a sharp ruler who oversaw the country through significant war, threats to sovereignty and social change. But that wouldn't have been as popular with the audiences who fancied a titter I guess.

The Mummy (2017) with Tom Cruise. It was a comedy right??? As far as I'm concerned the only worthwhile films are The Mummy and The Mummy Returns with Brendan Fraser. The third film (Tomb of the Dragon Emperor) was wank and I refuse point blank to watch anything with Tinypants in it so that's where I stop.

Started to watch Mike Myers' limited series; 'The Pentaverate'. Couldn't get through more than 30 minutes of the first episode. Sorry, but the template worked 25 years ago, now, not so much.
Going to watch Rob Zombie's 'The Munsters' but based on the trailers, I expect to report back here soon. lol
