OMG this is heartbreaking
I've now read several times that the bodies were barely identifiable, and I must admit, I am so brainwash by TV series and films that I have zero fucking idea what impact a bullet actually has on a body, let alone a tiny child's body.
This all makes me so sad and angry

Things will only really change when the kids who grew up with shootings are voting and running for office. Our 41 year old daughter was a junior in high school when the Thurston shooting happened just 50 miles away from us. Then Columbine happened in her senior year. She definitely has residual PTSD from it, what about the younger kids?? There is a haunting photo of a line of little kids being escorted away from Sandy Hook in 2012. It's fried into my consciousness and breaks my heart.

I've said that for years. Once these kids, who have been trained to hide from an active shooters, reach voting age change will slowly start happening.

We can only hope, dolem. It's a dreadfully sad and infuriating thing to say but if it carries on like this then there's certainly going to be enough of them to make a difference in the years to come. |

^^I'm thinking more of middle school thugs that have more testosterone than sense. What's it take for a couple of large middle schoolers to overpower a middle aged, female teacher, take the gun and start shooting. It's not much, and I have a kid going into middle school.

This is exactly why I refuse to even entertain the idea of carrying a gun on me.
Even when I was working out and around in "the hood(s)" of Memphis.
Anyone who knows anything about guns (and I was raised around some, have shot guns before) will tell you that you're more likely to have one taken and used against you in a situation where you can be overpowered. Especially a woman. That's why if you pull one out it needs to be with the intent of using it. Not just to try and be a bad ass or for the scare factor.
And if you pull one and even hesitate for a moment to use it that's all the time it takes to have someone manage to get it away from you.
Now I could get shot by someone regardless. But I'll be damned if it's gonna be because I had one on me in order to give someone the opportunity they wouldn't have had otherwise.
I was of the mind that if someone got close enough to me with the intent to do damage I could easily gut them (or incapacitate them without killing them...I know where on the body will do that) with my "supplies".

It's not much, and I have a kid going into middle school. you raise a very fair point. so many middle schoolers are basically adult shaped children these days, it wouldn't take much for those kids to overpower a teacher. it just routinely astounds me that republican dirtbags think that adding more guns to the equation is really going to help anything. especially even more guns at schools, I mean jesus christ. I hope your child is able to continue to stay safe during the school months. sincerely. I can't imagine how nerve wracking it must be to have a child currently in school during these times. |

I remember seeing this 20/20 segment about mass shootings and they had a bunch of people that thought they were really good with firearms in a college lecture hall setting and then simulated an armed intruder coming in and start shooting. The people found out that they are not, in fact, very good with guns and are not at all trained to handle this type of situation mentally. It was very eye-opening for them. We've seen time and time again that law enforcement officers aren't prepared for this type of situation, how do they expect teachers to be? The whole gun situation in America is so infuriating because they will do ANYTHING to not limit guns. It's like they circle the problem and figure out ways to actually have more people armed. I hate guns with a passion, so this makes me sick. They also come up with these dumb ideas to make public places safer, but we wouldn't need them to be safer if there were less armed people and less access to these assault-style rifles. I despise the NRA and what they've done to the 2nd amendment. |

Exactly. Even law enforcement officers who receive specific training around firearms and situations that are supposed to call for them make errors in judgement or timing. And have even occasionally had their own guns forcibly taken.
Not everyone has the mental wherewithal...in fact, probably most people don't, the closest who do are probably people who have just come out of intense military training or actual warfare/battle over an extended period of fighting to stay alive...to shift gears fast enough to the mindset needed to come out of these situations intact.
If you are okay with carrying, you'd basically better be okay with killing people. And dealing with the consequences if you fuck it up.

So if you don't know the shooter is creeping up on your classroom, the seconds it takes to get that gun ready by the time you're aware could be longer than you have as the shooter moves on your class. And I'm just thinking if it were me, I'd be like, oh shit there's a shooter, okay hold on, let me get my gun. Meanwhile, the maniac with the eagle eye and the AR15 is upon us. |

Just waiting for the next news story about a teacher who uses a weapon against a school shooter and ends up getting killed by the cops (if they bother to even show up) because they come upon the scene and shoot the first person they see with a gun.
