Johnny Depp has taken the stand in his blockbuster $100million defamation trial against his ex-wife Amber Heard.
'About six years ago Miss Heard made some quite heinous and disturbing criminal acts against me that were not based in any species of truth,' Depp said. 'It was a complete shock that it would, it just didn’t need to go in that direction as nothing of the kind had ever happened.
'Through the relationship there were arguments and things of that nature but never did I myself reach the point of striking Miss Heard in any way nor have I ever struck any woman in my life.'
The Pirates of the Caribbean star told of his abusive upbringing at the hands of his mother as he was questioned by his own lawyers.
Depp described 'verbal abuse, name calling, bullying' by his mother.
Sources told DailyMail.com that Depp plans to tell the jury how he was personally affected by his bitter split with Heard.
A source said: 'He's not going to hold back with his feelings.'
Before Depp, the jury heard from Kennan Wyatt, a friend of his who will testify about a flight from Boston to LA he was on where Depp was supposedly drunk and abusive towards Heard.
Keenan Wyatt, a friend of Depp's and a sound technician who worked on numerous Pirates movies, described being on a Boston to Los Angeles flight in May 2014.
On board was Heard, Depp and their assistants.
He described how Heard was 'giving Johnny the cold shoulder, being quiet and seemed pouty.'
He said: 'At one point I went up to her and said he cares about you and all of a sudden she snapped, how dare you talk to me, get away from me. I went back to my seat and minded my own business.
'She was abruptly loud. It was a quiet plane, all of a sudden it got very loud. Johnny had said something to her like don't talk to my friend that way. I just stayed in my seat'.
Wyatt said he did not witness Depp being violent towards Heard and in the decades he had known him he had 'never seen Johnny be violent towards anybody.'
The account contradicts the portrait painted by Heard's lawyers during their opening statements.
They said that Depp kicked Heard in the back on the trip and had had 'no food for days, used cocaine, had half a bottle of whiskey, countless Red Bulls and vodkas, he'd taken pills and on the plane decided to top that off with two bottles of champagne'.
According to Benjamin Rottenborn, one of Heard's lawyers, Depp 'blacked out, abused Amber and didn't remember any of it.'
Another of Heard's legal team said that she recorded Depp in the back of the plane when he passed out and was 'moaning loudly.'
In his evidence Wyatt revealed that Depp sometimes used an earpiece while filming - and that he was a huge fan of British comedy.
Wyatt said that the first occasion they used an earpiece was while filming a movie called The Brave, which came out in 1997.
He said that the director let Depp's co-star Marlon Brando go home for the day as it was a long shooting day.
Depp wore the earpiece which had Brando's dialogue piped into it 'so Johnny could act up against Marlon's performance' as they continued to film.
According to Wyatt, Depp would
'listen to music while acting' and they would play rock, blues or classical music depending on his character.
According to Wyatt, Depp used to do this 'in every movie' and sometimes
needed his lines read to him.He said: 'Johnny typically likes to go into makeup in the morning and write his own dialogue and rewrite his own dialogue. Sometimes there is not enough time to learn the lines so I would remind him sometimes, while music was playing'.
Wyatt claimed that Depp was 'absolutely prepared'
for his roles despite his idiosyncratic work habits.
Asked about Depp's sense of humor, Wyatt laughed.
He said: 'He likes British humor. Sometimes a little dark maybe, he likes plays on words'.
Asked if Depp liked Monty Python, Wyatt said: 'There's a show in England called The Fast Show he used to love watching.'
The court heard claims that Depp said
'pretty horrible things' to Heard on the Boston to Los Angeles flight in 2014.Heard's lawyer Elaine Bredehoft challenged Wyatt's recollection of the events of the trip.
She said: 'You get on the plane and it's your testimony that Miss Heard had a bad tone of voice with Mr Depp?'
Wyatt said: 'She had a
bad tone of voice with me'.
Bredehoft said: 'Wasn't Mr Depp saying pretty horrible things to Miss Heard?'
Heard's article never mentioned Depp by name, but Depp lawyer Benjamin Chew told jurors a week ago that it was clear Heard was referencing the Hollywood leading man.
Attorneys for Heard have argued she told the truth and that her opinion was protected as free speech under the U.S. Constitution's First Amendment.
Witnesses called by Depp's lawyers have included friends of the Pirates of the Caribbean star and a doctor and a nurse who said they treated him for substance abuse.
The witnesses testified that they were aware of arguments between the couple but had not witnessed physical abuse by Depp toward Heard.
'Their arguments were a trigger for him emotionally,' Debbie Lloyd, who
worked as a nurse for Depp when he was engaged to Heard, said in a videotaped March 8 deposition that was played for the jury on Monday.
'They would cause him to be upset, add stress.'
When asked by a lawyer for Depp if she was aware that any of the arguments between Depp and Heard became physical, Lloyd replied, 'No.'
A state court judge in Fairfax County, Virginia, is over
Less than two years ago, Depp lost a libel case against The Sun, a British tabloid that labeled him a 'wife beater.' A London High Court judge ruled he had repeatedly assaulted Heard and put her in fear for her life.
