I am selective about Chinese (or really any food from any culture that isn't middle America, including some American foods like Cajun...you cannot eat Cajun outside of Cajun territory, for ex.), but I find some good stuff here. But it's not like NY and I'm sure it is better in SF, but I've never been. It's always been on the bucket list (weirdly?) to have Japanese food in SF...if can't get to actual Japan, of course. I don't thing I had Chinese food in LA, not for lack of wanting it, but yeah... Our local "Chinese" is run by Malaysians and the majority of the food is very bland but they do a couple of things well - I had Singapore noodles (they call it "vermicelli") which is nearly spicy enough but has lots of meat + veg in it. So that was nice. It's Saturday night here + I didn't want to cook We have a great local population of Pakistani, Japanese, Chinese, etc but for most you have to drive to them from where I live + I just wanted a quick meal.

So that was nice. It's Saturday night here + I didn't want to cook We have a great local population of Pakistani, Japanese, Chinese, etc but for most you have to drive to them from where I live + I just wanted a quick meal. Yeah, I live in a weird wasteland of a hodgepodge of stuff...it's a giant metropolitan area, but it's also very midwest and nearly every Asian restaurant has sushi, crab rangoon, and orange chicken on the menu regardless of whether it's Thai, Japanese, Indian, etc. and it's so disconcerting. They dumb it down because you'll have that one person (usually me) who is reasonably adventurous and then you have the five other people in the party who have to have things dumbed down for them because they don't do ginger, or heat, or seafood, or whatever of any kind, etc. It drives me nuts. I was born in the wrong place. And sometimes the Chinese food is so bad and overpriced ($26 for Mongolian beef which is insane) that I have gone to Panda Express because at least I can get a ton of veggies on the side there and it's especially frustrating because I know that if I were just more focused I could make some of the more basic stuff better in my house. But on a positive note, the closest restaurant to my new job is a hole-in-the-wall Vietnamese place and I went there yesterday and it was soooo good. I walked in and was shocked at how packed it was and it was the real deal. I actually just ate the leftovers a while ago. After freezing my way through August, it's hot again, so I didn't want a huge ass unwieldy bowl of pho, so I got rice noodles with pork and spring rolls and veggies and a spicy sauce (bun bi cha gio).

I've got some homemade meat sauce simmering because I'm going to make something I have not in awhile. Zucchini lasagna.
I used a can of my garden grown tomatoes and I'm going to be using herbs (basil and oregano) from my garden.

I made fish and chips with mushy peas last night and although it wasn't amazing, at least I got off my ass and cooked something, which I rarely do. Next time I'll have to use the food processor instead of the Vitamix for the peas because it just pulverized them.

Lebkuchen hearts. Chocolate covered gingerbread heaven with a blob of apricot jam inside. I spotted the Christmas stuff starting to creep in at Aldi the other week and I've been waiting for them to hit the shelves. Now they are here and my part-time addiction is back in full swing.

I had chili because they had a chili cook off at my job. I didn't bring in any chili, but I think mine could have held its own...but my crock pot is busted.

We're having a chili cook off in a couple of weeks. I'm not a big chili cook, so I'm just going to bring sides.

savoury oatmeal (added some miso when it was done cooking), topped with leftover roasted zucchini and sweet potatoes, 2 poached eggs, some miso kimchi and turmeric sauerkraut, crushed pecans, a bit of avocado and hemp seeds. sounds weird but it's actually warm and comforting and delish, amost like a congee. and it's the only way i'll eat oatmeal because i don't feel like eating anything sweet in the morning.
