There’s something off about the proportions of her head and shoulders. Obviously puffy moon face is PS overkill. I think the clothing shoulder pads might be to hide that she’s getting old and frail? Something doesn’t look right (even by a flexible standard to account for all things vanity)

It's like Pete Burns has come back from the grave. Nailed it.

Something doesn’t look right (even by a flexible standard to account for all things vanity) She changed clothes at the Grammys because the outfit she's wearing as she gets out of the car is different from the outfit she wore when she gave her speech. She even changed shoes, going from something lighter in the car to the clodhoppers she's wearing when she speaks at the Grammys. She's worn this schoolgirl look with black tie several times in the past, but this time she has more exaggerated shoulder pads perhaps to balance out her swollen face. She's really holding onto those bodyguards for support as she gets out of the car. She may have arthritis from stress to her joints after all those years of dancing. She really looks awful here -- swollen face, bad hairstyle, no eyebrows.

I don't have the link, but I heard she was furious about people's observations and ascribing them to ageism and mysoginy.

and a high powered zoom camera. "many people chose to only talk about close-up photos of me taken with a long lens camera by a press photographer that would distort anyone's face!" source: www.cnn.com/style/article/madonna-grammys-ageist-response/index.html"The 64-year-old musician clapped back at the remarks, saying in her Instagram post that the world "refuses to celebrate women past the age of 45." Hard disagree, but people will comment if you make yourself into a caricature of your old self. I just feel bad for her, not because she's aging. Because she can't accept that she is aging.

Take a look at the thread for Rita Moreno, Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Sally Field. Combined age of 334 and if you take away the comments about Rita's weird foreskin gloves then the comments are overwhelmingly positive. Tilda Swinton (62) is generally applauded here, Andie McDowell (64) is praised for rocking her grey hair. The problem isn't age; it's trying to look (and act) like you are 24 when you are 64.

I totally agree with you, but her argument is that who are we to dictate what women a certain age should look like -- why can't she try to look an act like she is 24 if that's what she wants to do? She has a point. But I don't think she'll be a trendsetter for 60+ women any time soon. Actually, thinking about it, how funny would it be to see a bunch of 60+ women blowing up their butts, braiding their hair, lightening their brows, squeezing into bustiers, wearing fishnets and crosses and walking around carrying riding crops. That would be a sight to see. Add Sharon Stone to your list. Same age as Madonna, looking gorgeous and sexy and living her best life.

To be fair, women of ALL ages are dictated what they should look like, and wear. I remember being told by complete strangers on the beach that "If you don't wear a bikini now, when are you gonna do it, when you're 60?" I was 16 and wearing surf shorts and rashguard because I'm fair skinned and I turn lobster red after 5 minutes in the sun, but thanks for the comment, random person. And also, the fuck will I wear a bikini at 60 if I want to!

My mom would have been appalled that I have longer hair past 50.

My mom would have been appalled that I have longer hair past 50. omg, that's so true, isn't it? That generation was so old before their time. Old lady clothes, and short hair (see below) that they had washed and styled once a week at the old biddy salon. When I look back at old family pictures, all those great aunts and my grandmother who seemed so old were actually younger than I am now (!) This is how I see them. And can you believe Angela Lansbury was 58 years old when she started on Murder She Wrote??
