That's pretty crazy for y'all eh? For us it's insanity. We're built for and around rain, fog and cold. Our houses are designed to keep heat in rather than let it out. I'm already finding the cats asleep in the sink and dark corners to escape the heat and it hasn't even got going yet. I'm absolutely dreading the next few days as even a normal British summer is torture for me. I'm probably going to spend most of it lying nekkid in front of a fan.

^^^^ Well, after what Kitty just said, I'm kind of ashamed by my rant -- but I'm going to do it anyway....
Rant - Mrs Mo is in some storybook town in Germany for a work trip. I think she is staying in a bed and breakfast kind of place because it's like a small house and her room is on the top level. I couldn't go with her because of the nature of the work, the plane ticket was $3.500, and it wouldn't be fun doing stuff by myself. I'll post photos on FB.

(even in winter I don't tend to have it warmer than 20C more like 18C that's warm enough!!!) I've had to open my loft hatch to try to get some of the heat out. I may have to sleep on the sitting room floor to try to keep cool tonight. My parents are in their 80s & live in a house with large windows + great heat retaining properties. I am very worried about them.

I could not survive without air conditioning. I often wonder how they did it back in the olden days and now wonder how you and your cats do today. Bless you guys.

yeah, the northern half of europe isn't used to these levels of heat. almost no one has air conditioning and like kitty said, houses aren't designed for it. but these heatwaves are quickly becoming the norm. one of my best friends is on the verge of giving birth in paris and she's spent the last couple of weeks at home in the dark in front of a fan trying to move as little as possible.

I feel for you all. I grew up without air conditioning and I'd take showers right before bed and have a fan blow directly on me so I could get some sleep. It wasn't until I had air that I couldn't manage without it. I'm a wimp now. The minute it gets humid now I'm closing up the house and putting on the air. I can't stand it.

It was 102F/39C here earlier then about 96F/36C
I dunno what it is right now.
Our houses are designed to keep the temperature inside different from the temp outside, so I have my curtains shut, my windows closed + my loft hatch open (hot air rises after all) & managed to keep my house "down" to about 27C/80F? or there abouts.
Quite proud of myself.

I've just looked up the humidity and it says it's 17% in London (Florida is usually in the 70-90% range.) I want to say that's pretty low and makes it more bearable BUT at 97F it's still heat y'all aren't used to. Stay cool!
I am partial to those gel ice packs you keep in the freezer, a couple of those on my neck, wet washcloths in front of fans and sometimes on cold tile is how I remember sleeping during infernal Mexico summers.

I've been keeping a couple of packs of wet wipes in the fridge for a quick cooldown and sweat mopping. I also needed to nip to the local shop - about a 3 minute walk each way - and even though I left it until after 8pm I was still nearly on my knees on the way back. And I noticed that the field opposite my house is tinder dry so no doubt the fire brigade will have to come out soon. And the heat has made my feet swell up like puddings.
But my kitties are doing ok. They've found all the cool spots in the house, which they should enjoy while they can because as soon as I find out which one of them managed to knock over a nearly full bottle of fabric softener which then exploded across the kitchen...

I had a hot steam shower (to try to sort out my sinuses - allergies!) and it was blissful. It was even nice getting out & feeling cool!

Yeah I was very glad the humidity was low, it makes a huge difference. My house currently feels like a sauna though!

Low humidity makes a difference, to a point, but hot is hot. I remember going to Phoenix in July on a business trip. It's a dry heat alright... felt like I opened an oven door and walked into it. Yikes. Loved all the misters they had around.
