An artist who has spent almost 40 years transforming her countryside cottage into a 'real life dolls house' has been told that the property is now 'unsellable'. Mary Rose Young and her husband Phil Butcher purchased their home, which also doubles up as a pottery studio, in Lydney, Gloucestershire, in 1987 At the time, the couple were able to buy the property for £30,000 and have decorated every room in their unique style. The kitchen features a checkerboard splashback and yellow walls with flowers painted on. Meanwhile, Mary's pottery studio - where she makes her Alice in Wonderland-inspired designs - has a multicoloured striped ceiling featuring various floral patterns. Ten years ago, Mary and Phil decided they wanted to open a boutique hotel and put their home up for sale. At the time, estate agents were confident the house was worth £500,000. However, buyers were said to have been put off by the quirky interior choices. www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-13123763/artist-dolls-house-home-quirky-interior-design-unsellable.html

Yeah, half a million pounds to buy it, knowing you'd need to spend that much on paint to cover all of that, that is steep XD However, I think these kinds of properties can be good deals for handy people. The sellers will have to sell under the market price if they want to sell, no way people are going to buy that otherwise. And then it's basically just a paint job, the house itself has lovely space and nice beams in the living room that for some reason got painted an atrocious colour XD

Hideous. I could not live in that clown house for one second. Just looking at the photos causes my eyes to cross. Headache-inducing mess.

I probably shouldn't have looked at it so long when I already have a migraine but I am kind of fascinated by how gaudy and horrid it all is. Or 'colourful and quirky', as the artist would probably describe it.

Honestly...aside from the kitchen...I don't really hate it. Not sure what that says about me lol

Paint and new light fixtures (probably new fixtures everywhere as I assume they're ALL painted including cover plates for plugs/switches). The space is still nice, but it's a lot of work for that much money

I'd take it on. I grew up helping my mum paint and paper the house and while it looks like a big job on the surface, I think once the current owners furniture is out it'd be a lot less daunting. Spend a week with a roller magnolia-ing the shit out of everything to make it less migraine inducing and liveable (10L of emulsion for £8 in B&Q stores so not expensive, even for a massive house) and then rework it room by room as and when.

it looks fun but no way i could live there. there used to be a quirky older lady here known as the button lady. she was an artist who covered EVERYTHING with buttons. i kid you not. i knew of her since she was a legend but one day i went to a garage sale and it turned out to be hers. she was so nice. she gave me a tour of her home, an adorable craftsman and yeah, there were buttons everywhere. mouldings, mantel, etc. her house ended up selling at market value because of the location (very hot neighborhood). i'm sure the yuppies who bought it removed all the buttons.

i appreciate quirky homes like this, better than the all beige generic ethan allen look. but i'd need to be heavily sedated to be able to hang out in there for more than a half hour.

I feel like it's the kind of place where a kindly old lady would fatten you up with candies and sweets before she cooked you.

Its just SO MUCH. I could have given her like one room, but the whole damn house? Her man is ultra-patient.
The outside makes it look so inviting and then, WHAM!

Agree it's beyond over the top but paint will reverse almost all of it. I don't see why that means the house has no value.
