It's easy to say that he should have let it go, but with someone like Amber Heard it can be really hard because they won't let go of you. He left it alone, she published the OpEd and set herself up as a figurehead for abused women, something that she couldn't have done without making and maintaining her slew of allegations. The entire uptick of her career and public profile was down to her association with him - it was his influence that supposedly got her the part in Aquaman. Before Depp she was a generic blonde actress in a sea of generic blonde actresses but wholly lacking the acting ability to ascend any further on her own merit and pretty much forgettable by the time the credits rolled. She needed to do this for herself, to keep her profile up and her income fat. Her requests during divorce negotiations for the three penthouses and the cars and the artwork and the lump sum and the rather large monthly stipend all had to be cast aside to prop up her stance of Not A Gold Digger, along with donating, sorry, pledging the $7 million settlement to charity (which she still hasn't done, despite there being quite some time between the pledge and the filing of the first case).
How did he, a much older, supposedly wiser man fall for her BS? Simple. People who abuse other people often have an incredibly charming side to their personality. They can be everything you ever dreamed of and so much more but with a side of vulnerability that makes you open your heart to them so much faster than you normally would and excuse away the early warning signs that this person is going to turn out to be bad news. No abuser walks into your life and announces that they are going to fuck it up for you. Instead they float in on what feels like the most refreshing breeze you've ever felt, insinuate themselves and then gradually start to erode your mental and emotional foundations before slowly but surely increasing the level of abuse as your sense of what is normal and acceptable adjusts in line with it. Many people refer to it as being like boiling a frog in a pot - if you try putting a frog into a pan of boiling water it'll struggle to get away, but if you put it into a pan of cold water and ever so slowly increase the temperature the frog stays there, swimming about happily without realising that it is going to be boiled to death. People of all ages can be abusers and abused and just because the commonly held belief that the older person is the one who holds the emotional and intellectual power still doesn't mean it can't happen the other way around. Age doesn't protect you from an abuser and youth doesn't prevent you from being an abuser.
Then there were the 'borrowed' truths from the trial - the allegations that Depp was so out of it on set that he had to be fed his lines through an earpiece. Doesn't that sound a little familiar? It's the rumour that was floating around just before Bruce Willis came out and admitted that he was being forced to retire due to Aphasia. Willis, not Depp, was the actor who was struggling with his lines, but not because of drugs but a cruel and debilitating condition that was robbing him of his cognitive abilities. Also a sound engineer who had regularly worked with Depp also swore under oath that the allegation was total bunkum. The microwaved baby threat. That came from the Vardy/Rooney trial in the UK and made the press before Amber regurgitated it on the stand. The details of the sexual assault allegation were cribbed from the assault experienced by her former assistant. The suggestion that Depp had been abusive to previous partners and thrown Kate Moss down the stairs was debunked by Moss herself who testified that he had never assaulted her. The suggestion from Amber herself while on the stand that Kate Moss and others were "coming out of the woodwork" to gain favour. Kate Moss doesn't need to come out of the woodwork or gain favour with anyone. She's highly successful and still incredibly famous in her own right. A Private Investigator hired by Amber to dig dirt has gone on record as saying that despite his best efforts he could find no evidence of Depp physically abusing any previous partners and when he submitted his findings to Amber and her team he was promptly fired and replaced. The dodgy photographs of bruising that were supposedly taken separately but were actually the same picture with a little editing. The claims that she was bruised to fuck and had a split lip when she appeared on James Cordon's show - no amount of makeup is going to hide the damage she claimed was done there and no amount of red lipstick will hide a split lip (I promise you, it's damn hard to cover with lipstick. Or smile or speak without it hurting and/or popping open). She claimed her makeup artist could testify to the truth of it - but the make up artist never appeared and never testified. The video and audio clips that demonstrated words and objects being damaged but oddly enough none of the violence against her. The biggest admission of violence actually came from her, along with taunting that Depp wouldn't be believed and the complaints that he kept trying to escape from her by walking away and locking himself in the bathroom when she lost her temper. Walking away and locking yourself in the loo aren't the actions of an abuser but of a victim. Abusers are always ready to go toe to toe with you because they can't allow you to foster any spark of defiance against them. Her claims that the trailer they stayed in was completely trashed but the owner saying it was one light fitting that cost less than a hundred dollars to put right and that Depp had been personable and relaxed until Amber's mood noticeably shifted for the worse, at which point he become more and more introverted and nervous. On and on it goes and the more half truths, embellishments and lies a person tells the less likely it is that you can believe anything they say.
Amber sunk her own case all by herself and still can't take responsibility. Now its not just Depp's fault but the witnesses fault, the mainstream medias fault, the jury's fault, society's fault, social media's fault, the legal systems fault. Everybody's fault but hers.

Bruce Willis isn’t the first actor to be fed lines though an earpiece. There have been rumours about this with other actors and the first time I heard it was about gérard depardieu

My take: They're both asshole abusers. He's a violent addict and this has been proven long before Amber. She's a borderline button-pusher and probably lies/exaggerates for attention (which doesn't mean he didn't abuse her) which was stupid on her part. Obviously they're both big time narcs.
I just don't see how anything she did served to defame him more than his own unstable behavior before and after their relationship, but most especially his obsession with her that if anything seemed to intensify after the split. She's been far more defamed than him. Which I'm sure was his goal.
There have been lots of instances of famous splits where one and/or the other threw shade publicly. Hell, we live for that shit on this board. Eventually everyone moves on. Even some people who had acrimonious splits manage to become civil/friendly with one another again. Regardless, most are smart enough/have good enough lawyers and publicists who put NDAs in place to protect each from the other (and themselves).
But this whole stupid trial shit where an entire sordid relationship was laid out (one that in reality ended years ago, but obviously not, since shit is still going on) was a three-ring-fucking-circus. And I'm floored that it was allowed to happen. I can't believe he was okay with it happening. It makes me question his judgement about as much as getting involved with her beyond an on set fling did.
I'm also embarrassed for his kids and all his exes going all the way back to Winona having to see this and know that the world has as well. But I'm sure they're the least of his concern. Sticking it to her took precedence over everything.
None of this had to be public. And in the long run having done so is probably not going to do him any favors. He had plenty of vouchers and people who didn't believe her, or more importantly, didn't even care.
Bottom line is the real reason he lost out on work is because he's an unstable addict. It's also the reason he ended up in a toxic relationship in the first place. But he doesn't want to address this.

I stand corrected then. But making a joke about microwaving a pet is different to cribbing another person's testimony from another action. FWIW microwaving a pet is an old, old joke in the UK after an eyebrow raising sketch on a show, although it was a cat and not a dog in that case. I've told my cats I'm going to microwave them many times. And told them that they're going in the washing machine and the oven and that I'll turn them into cat kebabs. I'd never actually, even for a second, do it and the cats continue not to give a single fuck and carry on doing whatever fiendish cat stuff they were doing anyway. Hell, last night I was telling the youngest that she was going to be turned into a pie after the little shit decided to slide down my leg instead of jumping off my lap and left me with a deep six inch bloody scratch down my calf. And yet here she is today, doing her best to take over as much of my desk as she can and trample my keyboard. Not a cat pie in sight. Little bastard would probably taste terrible anyway.

^^^ In all honesty, I don't know what his legal team would have done without the trial being public. Because even if he had lost, this televised hearing turned around public perception of him and made him employable again. As far as the decision to allow TV cameras, there was an article that said this was almost an unprecedented case for this kind of court and venue. And that the judge's rationale for allowing it to be televised was flawed. While I didn't really have strong feelings about Depp one way or the other, I know that for the last few years on the other board, there was a collective "WTF" over his teeth, his clothing, and apparent physical shape. I do think he has been kind of skating for years on weird stuff he's done or been linked to (e.g. - Viper Room and River Phoenix OD'ing in front of it.

I have a built-in bias and trigger because of the drink and drugs. I can't deny many of the arguments coming from either side.
No doubt it is too much to hope for that they both just go away.

Of course, he wanted it televised. She didn't, but it was obvious she was out-lawyered. He was out to destroy her and he pretty much accomplished that. Getting his "good name" back, well sure, according to his adoring fans (and I am not including anyone here) but it remains to be seen whether this has helped his employability. He did lay bare some ugly truths about himself and the extent of his addictions, which may have been suspected, but he confirmed what a mess he is (or was) yet still joked about it in his testimony. Even if you don't believe he physically abused her, that recording of him slamming cabinets, and the pics of her destroyed closet convinced me that he was abusive and out of control. To me, it's not a stretch that someone in that kind of rage would escalate to physical violence.
As for her photos being doctored, I don't remember that being proven in court, but I haven't really researched it. I do have to wonder if doctored, why not make them look worse, because really, none of them were that bad compared to her description of the abuse. Whether she's a liar, a gold digger, a borderline or whatever doesn't mean she wasn't abused. And all the expert witnesses were bought and paid for by both sides, so they cancel each other out in my book. Amber's psychologist had more experience and credentials than Dr. Curry, but Dr. Curry was "hot" as was Camille Vazquez and all the twitterverse was shipping her and Depp.
I still don't think her op-ed cost him his career. His issues were well-known before that, and his lawsuit against the tabloid was well-known, but even before that, he sued his lawyer, money managers, fired his agent, because everything was somebody else's fault. He cost Disney tons of money on the last Pirates movie. They actually assigned a person to sit in front of his rented house and let them know when the lights came on and when he was showing up on the set, usually HOURS late. Then the finger. If the jury believed the op-ed cost him Pirates, they would have awarded a lot more than $10m. There are no innocent victims here, least of all Johnny Depp.
