I bought stuff to make chili later this week but can’t find a fucking poblano anywhere. Suggestions for a substitute other than jalapeños that I don’t like?
My fav chili recipe uses both a poblano and a Serrano. It’s the perfect heat level for me.
If worse comes to worse I’ll drive downtown to an Hispanic market for one. It’s rough because our biggest grocery chain is on strike and I’m not finding all I want at Safeway or target.

I was going to say serranos. Maybe you could mix with jalepeno?
They had some pretty big poblanos the last time I was at our grocery.

Would roasting a green pepper substitute?

If this is for chili, maybe a roasted green bell pepper would be close for flavor. Closer than jalapeno, anyway. You might have to go to the hispanic market, otherwise. Do you have any dried guajillos on hand? I like those for my red enchilada sauces. Sometimes they're spicy, sometimes they're not, it's a heat-level roulette.

Best advice is go to your local Mercado or Mexican meat market. Of course, I went to mine today and was distracted by all other deliciousness that I forgot to check.

I second (third?) the notion of roasting a green bell. The flavor will be close in my experience. Then again, I'm kinda a pepper whore and it doesn't really matter what I throw in as long as I have a bunch.

Hatch chile, they are not in season now but you can get them canned at the HEB.

I won’t be back in Texas until next month. I bet HEB has all the poblanos I could ever want.🙁

These bitches at Publix charge $4 or more a lb. for poblanos. Unless I go to the cheaper ethnic markets on the other side of the tracks, but I never feel like making the trip just for that.
