Liam Payne, former One Direction member, dead at 31

Oct 16 (Reuters) - Former One Direction singer Liam Payne died outside a hotel in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires, local media reported on Wednesday, saying the 31-year-old British musician was found dead after falling from the hotel's third floor.

Citing officials, leading local newspapers La Nacion and Clarin reported that police were called to the hotel in the capital's leafy Palermo neighborhood responding to an emergency call that cited "an aggressive man who could be under the effects of drugs and alcohol."

Ambulance workers later confirmed the death of the singer, who was found in an interior hotel patio, according to the news reports.

Liam Payne rose to global fame as part of the since-disbanded pop band One Direction, alongside Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson.

The boy band got its start after finishing third on the British version of the X Factor music competition show in 2010, but the group broke up in 2016 as its members pursued different projects including solo careers.

Shocking, but also not. There's been a lot of bad stories about him being abusive recently. I had a feeling he wouldn't make old bones, it felt like he'd been spiralling for a while.

Sources close to the situation tell TMZ ... Liam Payne and his girlfriend Kate Cassidy arrived in Argentina on September 30, posting several social media posts together showing them having fun on vacation. We're told she left Argentina on the 14. Liam stayed behind, and checked into the CasaSur Palermo Hotel.

Alberto Crescenti, head of the state emergency medical system, said on Argentinian television that Payne fell into a courtyard of the CasaSur Hotel in the trendy Palermo neighbourhood.

Pablo Policicchio, a spokesperson for the security ministry of Buenos Aires municipality, said the musician "had thrown himself from the balcony of his room".

What ever happened to these kids was bad. wasn't Zane Malik 1D too? And he was hooked on drugs for ages.

My daughter was a huge fan back in the day and she is so sad, but also not surprised. Liam wanted to be the star of the show and Harry Styles emerged as the fan favorite. He expressed a lot of bitter feelings after the band broke up. He's had a rough time. His relationship with Cheryl was icky. She met him when he was just a teen. I feel sad for his little boy.

so police got a call about a guy acting violent and out of his mind on drugs and alcohol?
it's possible he didn't mean to kill himself but was basically in drug induced psychosis or something. a sort of accidental suicide.

Yeah, this is what I was thinking. What a mess is made by our child celebrity industry and the men who traditionally run it.

There were also some harsh allegations that were made in the last couple of days. His ex accused him of stalking, women came out claiming he had inappropriate contact (by text mostly I think) with them when they were still teens.

It's way too short of a distance (three floors?) to be suicide/deliberate. It sounds like the kind of death by misadventure you see with drunk people playing around a balcony area.

this is the back of the hotel, presumably that's the courtyard they're referring to unless there is another internal one but anyway it gives an idea of the  height from which he fell.

In the book his ex wrote (it was about Liam but written as 'fiction inspired by true events') she said he got into rages, smashed things up and threatened to jump off a balcony..

we have had several accidental deaths like this involing celebrities over here.
on top of my mind i remember a huge comedian in the 80s, a closeted tv presenter that was struggling with addiction, and a punk singer that was playing videogames with friends.

and there is also that time when a musician jumped to the pool from the roof of the hotel were he was staying.
