Longtime TV personality Jerry Springer, who helped pioneer the genre of confrontational daytime television, died on Thursday, his representative said.
He was 79.
The former mayor of Cincinnati, Springer died in Chicago, publicist Linda Shafran told NBC News. The cause of Springer's death was not immediately disclosed.
“The Jerry Springer Show” ran from 1991 to 2018 and was known for its profanity-prone guests who often had to be restrained by on-set security guards as audience members wildly cheered, "Jerry, Jerry, Jerry!"
The show's 1990s popularity made it a ratings rival of daytime polar opposite, "The Oprah Winfrey Show,” and Springer had no regrets for the high-energy, low-brow material he aired on afternoon TV.

I just saw a TikTok of an old interview of him explaining how he was born in an air raid shelter in London and they lost most of their extended family to Hitler. I hadn't known that.

My sister and I used to watch him at 1:30 AM when we were in college. Many funny memories. RIP Jerry! Jerry Springer and Maury Povich. Watch two minutes and then try to change the channel to something more 'elevating.' It's the train wreck you simply can't take your eyes off. There is a boatload of horrific at the people and problems it seemingly targeted. Tabloid TV at its worst, but... I didn't watch it very often, but if I stumbled across it I couldn't look away. Fascinating. Really horrible, but fascinating.

I remember he did Dancing with the Stars so he could learn to waltz with his daughter at her wedding, which was so sweet.

RIP Jerry. He had such a good-natured personality. I heard him in an interview being asked why he hosted such an obnoxious show, or some question like that, and he said hey if there's a market for these kind of shows, lots of people obviously enjoy it, so why not? I liked his answer.

I went to a taping of his show in the early 90s. The show wasn't into the crazy chair throwing and fist fight stage yet. He taped two shows a day. He was really nice with the guests and audience. Contrast that to Oprah, who couldn't be bothered unless someone was paying her a compliment.
RIP Jerry.
