Rave - Just after Christmas I bought a vintage Betty Crocker cookbook (1959) through Amazon. It was picked up by FedEx and then never put in the tracking system. For over three weeks there has been no information. I was sure that the book had been misplaced and I was very disappointed. Just as I started looking around for another copy, it appeared in the system and is finally on the move. Yay!

They lost it and then found it! Yay!
My (tentative) rave is that I'm finally getting LASIK this Friday. I'm scared because well, anything where shit is in my eyes gets me super anxious. They give you valium before, so I am putting all my hopes on that so I don't freak out. But I'm so excited to get rid of my damn glasses just to get around.
I will need glasses for reading, and I am totally ok with that.

That's great - valium has its uses. Do you have a driver?

That's great - valium has its uses. Do you have a driver? Yep, my husband is taking the day off and is on kid duty for the rest of the day. They say you should be able to function normally the day after, and about a week to fully heal. I'm just worried about rubbing my eyes too hard, my stupid eyes are sensitive to every little piece of dust, lint, eyelash, dryness, everything, that's why contacts weren't feasible for me.

Update on my sister's one-of-a-kind, never-been-done-before open-heart surgery: (Brief version: My 72-year-old sister has a clot in her lung that has scar tissue and has also attached itself to her heart, so it has to be removed. The reason the surgery has never been done before is that it's never been discovered in a living person before - only during an autopsy.) Last week, they told her that because of Omicron she would not be allowed to have even one person with her in the hospital. She's going to be admitted on Monday, but she can't have anyone come inside. They will allow her daughter to be in the hospital during the surgery, which will be on the 27th and will last between 8 to 12 hours. (Yikes) After the surgery, the doctor will come out and talk to my niece (my sister's only child) to let her know how it went, but after that, she can't come into the hospital. The doctors have emphasized that my niece can call them at any time, but we'll all have to communicate with my sister via phone, face-time, etc. Today, my niece tested positive for Covid. (sigh) She's been vaxed & boosted, so we are hoping she'll be over it by the 27th, but we'll just have to see. My poor niece is beside herself, and I can tell it bothers my sister a lot, but she is trying to focus on the positive and roll with the not-so-positive. Meanwhile, physically she is finally starting to resemble someone not quite at superpower status - it's getting much more difficult to walk around. She stopped driving herself a couple of days ago because she's having spells of near-fainting. But, you know, she is still walking around. So, still a superhero to me. I love her so much and wish I could help her somehow - especially from this imposed isolation. She's a people person, too (unlike me!) so it's tough on her. I just went back and read this, I'm hoping your sister's surgery goes smoothly. It has to be so hard to be going through that alone. Hope your niece has a speedy recovery. Keep us updated.

Rant - I'm studying for the LSAT (law school entrance exam) & I am overwhelmed, depressed, & terrified. No matter how much I study, I still feel unprepared & like I'm going to bomb it. I have been studying for months & I still feel like I'm not getting any better!

They let me watch a surgery and the machine actually does everything, the doc just basically directs the machine. It feels much safer that way.

Thx, Chalet. Our son wants to be a software engineer. I wonder if he will stick with that, though. I think our daughter wants to work for an animation studio. Wherever our son goes, I hope it's not too far from our daughter. She adores him and would be really, really hurt if he were in some far off place from where she goes to school. So middle son is starting his classes for a AR/VR associates degree. He already has a Liberal Arts AA that he got in high school, and since the Army thing didn't work out, he decided he doesn't want to do the 4 year college thing. Our community College has a program in Augmented and Virtual Reality. We have a local VR company here, and I know the CEO, so I Facebooked him to see if the program was good and if the hired from that program. He said yes and yes and when Matthew completes the program to give him a call. So he should said through it, because he doesn't need any BS gen eds. On a plus, Iowa has a special program for community colleges, where the state will pay for a degree for 25-30 different majors, and his is one of them. So bonus. For LASIK--I had it done over 15 years ago. I was so nervous, but it was the best thing I ever did. I could immediately see better after. My husband could hear me screeching down the hall, "I can read the sign!!" Good luck Beeyotch! It will be fine!

I have been studying for months & I still feel like I'm not getting any better! The stress is real, isn't it? My children's father went through it - he bombed the first one and took it again for a much better score. He ended up going to a top twenty law school, got a job at what's widely considered to be the number one firm in the US, passed the bar (THAT was exciting!) and had a really brilliant career until... he didn't. (alcoholic) My point, though, was that all you can do is study, do all the practice tests you can find, and then do your best. Life tends to give us second chances if we keep going, but I don't think you will need one. Stay strong - we believe in you!

Okay, I just talked to my sister for the last time before her surgery. They are coming to get her early, early, am. After the surgery begins, it will be 8-10 hours. It looks like they will allow my niece to wait in the waiting room they have for heart surgery family.
The doctor will call her when the surgery is over, and then she will call all of us.
Tomorrow is going to be a long day. I'm feeling pretty fragile right now - I just hate that she is alone, you know?
Any prayers, good thoughts or such are more than welcome.

I'm not religious, but I'll try a prayer if it'll help. You can definitely have all of my good thoughts for your sister, you, and your family.
