people still mask here in stores (i would guess ~20%) but i do not. if they required masks i would wear one. still required to wear them in medical settings. not sure about work since i haven't been onsite in >1 month. when i went, i saw some wear them. i definitely still keep my distance from strangers.
we wore masks at the airport and on the planes when we traveled at christmas. a lot did not.

I’m never in public without a mask. In my office I’ll take it off but I put it back on every time I get up from my desk. In Denver there’s still at least 25% of the population masked in public. At least some people care about those of us who are immune compromised.

^^ Exactly. I mean, newsflash, we are ALL over it but if it's required, in a medical or job setting, then stay home or don't take the job. Or if you're asked, for any reason. Granted, the worst of the pandemic seems to be over but there are still people at higher risk.

I’d rather be too cautious than too lax. My brother died from Covid and I know of quite a few others who have lost loved ones, or who have been very ill with it themselves. I have asthma and I really don’t want Covid so I will mask up when I feel it’s necessary. If she doesn’t want to wear a mask, she can turn down the job.

I think over the past 3 years the conditions have changed, we have vaccines, it's mutated and more people have been exposed. I don't wear masks unless I'm sick or if I'm in a medical clinic. Or any circumstance where it's required.
She accepted a job where those are the conditions, probably for insurance and financial reasons common to movie production. There are still immunocompromised people and masks may be a pain but not a big sacrifice on my part.
*eta: I have noticed a slight increase in public masking again in my immediate area, and it's made me wonder if there are news stories about new variants, etc.

I think there is about 5% of the general population still masking in public in the Baltimore-DC metropolitan area. It's really low at this point. The only places where usage spikes or is mandatory is in health clinics. I am seeing a pretty good number of cashiers and people in public-facing businesses wear them. In that case, they are being exposed to a huge cross section of people every day. The food bank I volunteer at requires us to wear them.
I think the only thing that really sounds off to me with Swinton is the fact that she has gotten it multiple times and has Long COVID and is done with masking. It sounds like none of her previous bouts with COVID have given her any immunity (unless it's the kind that reduces severity of the side effects) - so, I would think she has a tendency to be more vulnerable. Plus, with Long COVID, I think you could actually worsen your long-COVID symptoms if you get another bout of it.
To me, it sounds like she is being kind of fatalistic than being a science denier.

To me, the issue isn’t that she doesn’t want to wear a mask. As others have pointed out, lots of people are no longer masking. However, if you accept a job and are told that one of the requirements of the job is to mask, then use a mask. Getting up in front of an audience where you know you’re being recorded and announcing that you intend to flout the requirements of the job is the assholish behavior.

Most places don't require masks, but she accepted a job where they are requiring one, so IMO you suck it up and wear the mask. Yeah people who work as carers or are immunocompromised are still wearing masks. I see the home care team who go in to the lady in the next row over from me masking up before going in all the time and I still see people wearing them in supermarkets etc. For something like a film set, where dozens of people - without the same financial safety net as a well known, long time actress - can be laid off for weeks at a time without pay because of a Covid infection, I'd say it's pretty fucking important that safety and infection control protocols are followed. How lovely for you Tilda. Personally I'm still suffering from wheezing, fatigue, occasional light headedness, insomnia and my sense of smell fucked off during my second bout and hasn't been seen or heard from since. But I'm so glad that you are fine. I noticed my lung itching again where I had pneumonia, as it does when I am run down. And that was "just" pneumonia. My friend lost both parents - and I am sorry for your loss Constance Then there are people that cannot afford to catch it either for their own health or financial reasons. I am over people being "over" COVID + making stupid statements.

That's how I read it. And also a little exasperation that a film set would still be observing those rules and/or shutting down for one Covid case. Schools, workplaces, and other film sets etc. stopped doing that a long time ago. Seems like overkill in 2023 and a film set isn't a hospital or any kind of medical environment. But yeah it does beg the question why she accepted that job if she knew those were the rules, unless they're not rules and just recommendations.

I wear a surgical mask while working on campus and if we have programs running, an N95. Thems the rules at my institution along with mandated vaccination and boosters. The same rules apply to visitors, they must clear Security 48 hours before their arrival and mask up while here.

^^^ Just wanted to add that Mrs Mo hopped on a plane today for South Korea and there were no vaccination requirements (COVID or otherwise). No mask requirements. And only about 5 people out of 100 checking in at the Korean Airlines counter wearing masks (it was all one family, so maybe there was an immune suppressed person in the family). One of the ticket agents was wearing a mask.
By the way, the recommended vaccinations for South Korea are Typhoid and Japanese Encephalitis. Last weekend, Mrs Mo almost immediately got mild symptoms of what felt like food poisoning within hours of taking the shots. Bad enough that she felt like skipping the followup booster.
Oh, and Dulles International Airport is a super easy airport to get in and out of -- it just takes forever to get there.
