wow what a weak year. i'm surprised they even found 10 movies for the best picture category and i feel like over half are just filler.

as far as i can tell EEAO is pretty much the best by far.

"Banshees" is pretty highly regarded, too.

I agree with Sputnik -- Weak year and thin selection. SIX of the best actor/actress nominees are from TWO movies.

Also, I don't know who is casting Austin Butler for roles. I don't think he is a bad actors, but I don't see him as Elvis and definitely didn't see him as Tex Watson.

If Colin Farrell's filthy gorgeous ass wins I will be so thrilled ... but there's likely better performances in that category and Fraser is so lovely I hope he wins. Mind you, I have literally seen NONE of these. I got some catching up to do.

The only thing I've seen is Everything Everywhere (which I absolutely LOVE). I do want to see Colin Farrell and Brendan Fraser's movies though.

i want to watch Banshees and Living, maybe The Fablemans.

i was pleasantly surprised by Paul Mescal's nomination, even if i don't think he is going to win.
and i'm glad the daughter from EEAO also got a nod.

I loved EEAAO, was not expecting to have such a range of emotions in that movie. I cried, huge tears, when we saw it in the theater. So weird and wonderful and touching and heartbreaking.

EEAO - was just so HARD to keep track of. If I were going to try to explain it to someone was that it was a sci fi exploration of how an insignificant person could actually be super important in the context of an interrelated multiverse. Crossed with "Joy Luck Club".

I wasn't that interested in The Fablemans until I saw that Julia Butters is in it playing the sister. That is an AMAZING young actress who had a total star turn at a really young age in "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood".

I heard "The Whale" is not actually that great a movie. It's just that Brendan Fraser is great in it.

There are a LOT of feel-good nominations this year:
Fraser - amazing comeback story for a really well-liked guy
Ke Huy Quan - the grown of actor from "Indiana Jones" and "The Goonies"
Judd Hirsch, who has been around forever and was nominated over 40 years ago for "Ordinary People"
Michelle Yeoh - who may given an even longer acceptance speech than her Golden Globes one if she wins here
Jamie Lee Curtis - playing a really unflattering character really well

I'm so old, I haven't seen any of them and I remember the days when I made a point to see them all. Ok, actually I did see part of one while flipping cable channels. That was Elvis, and I thought it was cheesy as hell, and so was that mouth breather Austin Butler with that cheesy accent he was still using at the GGs. Maybe I missed something but I can't believe he won the GG and now up for the Oscar? And the movie too?

If he wins over Brendan Fraser I'm going on a shooting spree.

I loved EEAO! Such a trippy, emotional movie. I hope it wins big.

My favorite movie last year was RRR -- I've watched it 3 times. Never seen anything like it. Didn't get much award show love, except for a song.

I didn't care for Michelle Williams in The Fabelmans. But she's an Oscar darling.

I really think Covid killed the Hollywood industry. My husband and I watched a string of 2023 trailers and they were all remakes or sequels. The only original thing was Barbie and Oppenheimer (which was history).

I definitely see Frasier winning despite the movie itself having poor reviews - you know, Hollywood's way of saying "sorry!"

I discovered a really cool site on recent and upcoming-release movies: www.worldofreel.com/. On the site, they talk about an interview with Sam ("American Beauty", "1917") Mendes where he complains that a bunch of art-house movies were completely overlooked for nominations this year. He cites his own film "Empire of Light". Inarritu's "Bardo - False Chronical of a Handful of Truths". James Gray's "Armageddon Time". Damien Chazelle's "Babylon". These are all, for the most part, low-budget, art-house movies. But were poorly received by the people who did see them. Especially Inarritu's movie - which sounds like it was written by someone tripping in the desert.

Unfortunately I have a feeling that Lisa Marie dying might tip the balance towards Butler.  Sort of as a cynical sympathy sop for the family and because her passing has generated some extra buzz for the film.

Again, as much as I am cheering for Fraser because he seems genuinely lovely and has spent years being shat on over and over, I'm thinking that The Powers That Be will view a nomination as being enough to pacify supporters of the Brenaissance.  That would be a crying shame as the winner shouldn't be about how good or popular the movie was as a whole but rather that particular nominee's performance.  If someone can take a role in a not so great film and elevate the whole thing by the sheer strength of their performance rather than being muted by the material then that should be recognised as a mark of their skill at their craft.

I really and truly hope I am wrong though.
