Can I respectfully request that this thread not go off topic? I've been using it to check in on whether he's been found or not.

^^^ Fair enough, Faithanne. I have as well. They are only searching by air now. But there was another hiker found in the same area - so that means THREE hikers were lost in that area? That's kind of strange, isn't it? Why are people going off for a little hike during difficult weather conditions?

well, what day did these people leave for their hikes?
i just heard today of a woman who was hiking on mt tam (clearly not as rugged as the SB mtn range) last weekend, so days after the bad weather. she wasn't too far up (elevation-wise) but on a skinny trail that is steep. she lost her footing and slid down 150 feet and hit a tree. she is ok, but ick.

^^ This is 100% why if you're hiking alone you tell someone where you are planning to hike, the trailhead if there are multiple, how far you plan to hike, etc. Solo hiking is fine but you should be extra careful and if you can bring a GPS emergency messenger.
Last summer my husband and a friend went for a 8-10 mile hike and were gone all day. When he finally got back into cell service he said, "oh, we were on Mt Hood" and then quickly realized how dumb they both were. No one knew where they had gone and when he left in the morning he said, "I'm not sure where we are going, XX has a plan".

I was talking with someone tonight whose son just lost a childhood friend (at 23) because they were skiing in the dark after 6 pm, and he ended up in a "snow well" (a deep pocket of space that surrounds evergreen trees). The poor kid suffocated before help could get to him. The scary part is that they knew exactly where he was - but the clock is ticking in terms of the amount of time you have to save them.

That's kind of strange, isn't it? Why are people going off for a little hike during difficult weather conditions? So, according to the local news there were two hikers lost in the same general area. Julian Sands and another man named Robert Gregory. They both disappeared in the San Gabriel’s on the same day. However, they were in two different locations. Neither of them have been found. The third man went missing this past Sunday. He was found on Tuesday, alive and fairly unscathed. He was in the same area where it’s believed Julian Sands went missing. Leading up to this, a woman went hiking in the same area several weeks ago and slipped and fell to her death. It’s a pretty dangerous area. Mo, that’s just heartbreaking.

Mo- that is a tragic story. How awful.
I don't hold out much hope for these missing hikers.

^^^ Oh, Mo - that's awful. Thanks, everyone. Mrs Mo texted me a link to his memorial site. He was such a young guy. It looks like he had two sisters. The thing that I can't get over is that he didn't want to go out at the time of day that his friend did, but because his friend persisted, this kid went out with him. And this happened. I can't even imagine what the friend is going through, knowing that.
The one and only time I went skiing with our son was on a boy scouts trip. After doing the bunny slope a bunch of times, we did the "salamander trail" (green level) and a really long winding route down the mountain. There were so many points where it would have been easy to accidentally go down the hill into the trees. Either hitting one, or going into a tree well. It is freaking me out, just thinking about it now. But at least it was broad daylight, with a lot of other skiers around. I would think they could get help out right away in those conditions.

It’s a pretty dangerous area. They found one hiker, a 75-year-old man, the day after Julian Sands disappeared. He'd gone out on the same day, but they were able to find him (perhaps he told someone specifically where he was going). I don't understand why anyone would hike in that area without having a companion with them or letting someone know the area where they were hiking. Mt. Baldy is known to be a dangerous mountain. I suppose it's a challenge for an experienced hiker like Julian Sands, but there's so much risk when the weather gets bad. Surely there must be hiking clubs that one can join in Los Angeles.

I guess that familiarity/overconfidence can breed contempt. I used to know a guy in Norway who decided to take a drunken late night stroll with his dog up the lower slopes of the local mountain and got himself lost. Thankfully at some point his dog decided "fuck this, it's cold and I'm going home!" and he was able to make it back by following her, but it could have turned out very, very differently. Going back on topic, Julian's brother Nick has gone on record as saying that he's already accepted that his brother has died out there. There's been no sightings and no pings from his phone since 15th January so it's just a waiting game now to see if/when his remains are found.

Hikers have found human remains in a California mountain area where British actor Julian Sands went missing five months ago, authorities have said. The remains were discovered on Saturday morning near Mount Baldy in Southern California, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said. They have been taken to the coroner's office for identification which is expected to be completed next week, the department added. Sands, a keen hiker and mountaineer, was reported missing on 13 January after he failed to return from a hike in the Mount Baldy area. The 65-year-old Yorkshire-born actor is known for his roles in films including A Room With A View, Arachnophobia, Leaving Las Vegas and Warlock, as well as TV appearances on 24, Smallville and Banshee. news.sky.com/story/julian-sands-search-human-remains-found-in-california-mountains-where-actor-disappeared-12909125

A very sad ending that’s for sure. Hopefully, whether it’s Julian or not, some family will have answers soon.
