I wanted to put this in the gossip section because it might get missed in here but I'm a stickler and couldn't bring myself to do it. Anyone watching? I watched last night. I'm meh about it. They are in love, no doubt. But I'm not yet seeing the point of this. It's a bit shmaltzy and they def use Diana to pull at the heart strings but so far I'm not seeing the "what we went through" although they say it over and over again. The media frenzy is nuts of course but that's what they ALL go through so I'm not understanding how they were/are special victims of that. Hate it? Sure. So you leave, like they did. The racism of course is a different thing altogether and it's sick. By the same token, there is tons of footage of cheering crowds and all but fainting fans at the sight of Meghan so it's not like she was universally hated. She was adored quite a bit. I guess since her mother didn't prepare her for racism she was totally stunned by it and had no real tools for handling it, internally. I see it as Harry being so traumatized by what happened to his mother (rightly so) and Meghan so unprepared for racism and the vile paps (who could be?), they decided to bow out and try to live a normal-ish life. Makes total sense to me. But do we need books, interviews and documentaries about it? IDK I'm not getting it.

^^^ i completely agree with your last paragraph. i think it's too much data all at once: interview, docu, autobiography and we are seeing the backlash. their publicists have done a crummy job. i get that they wanted to do the money grab but it would've been more impactful if they had released data piecemeal.
my basic takeaway is that these two have led exciting lives but have blah personalities. they are really not that interesting (to me).

It seems like they're trying to monetize that royal connection while they can in case the public loses interest in them (which I don't see ever happening). I think they're going to be like the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. They may become irrelevent to the royal family, but they are still a source of interest to the general public. They've basically turned their backs on the royal family and the opportunities there in order to live their own private lives. Meghan seems far more interested, IMO, in wealth and fame than Harry does, but perhaps he's just tired of having the press in his face his entire life. I do think they are making a mistake in turning their backs on Harry's large, extended family. Meghan doesn't have much of a family other than her mother and those wacky Markles. But Harry's children have cousins and lots of other well-meaning relatives on his side of the family.

I haven't started watching it yet, but I definitely intend to. I've seen a lot of TikToks dissecting it.

They have Prince Louis for this. But yeah I could definitely see them going with Archie and Lili for filling this role if they were available. With the increase of hands-on technology readily available to people of all ages, it's going to be more difficult than ever for the BRF to keep things quiet when it comes to what these kids get up to, especially in their teen and college years.
And you know they will be up to things. All that wealth and privilege, and especially all the douchey entitled peers they'll be mixing with usually provides for a mess of scandals. But yeah can you imagine if someone had gotten a snap of Will in his costume from the Colonials and Natives party? Hell, just the fact that they were at such a party was bad enough. That would have caused as big a stink as the nazi outfit.
But there was nothing whatsoever that I remember about Will at all from that brouhaha. It read exactly like: "OMG look what rebel bad boy Harry did!: In actuality, he went to a party with his older brother who had a hand in all of it and thought the nazi outfit was hilarious.
This younger group better be careful. Every single one of their peers is going to have a camera phone.

That's an easy way to create monsters.

I'm under the impression that you would also have to curtsy to William and George, but I am not a royal expert. I've been watching. William turned into Charles and Harry turned into Diana. Like Charles, William began to resent Harry's likeability and his "office" turned the heat on Harry. I have no beef with H&M, and I think the relationship between William and Harry is permanently broken, unless William extends and olive branch, which I wouldn't bet on.

I haven't watched the second half yet.
I agree Louis that the brothers are playing out their parents story. William by becoming Charles and Harry by bucking the system and calling it out.
I think Harry's love for Meghan opened his trauma wound (his mother's death). So when paps are chasing her through the street, he isn't in his rational mind thinking "we all deal with this. it will be ok." He's little boy Harry losing his mom. PTSD is real and when triggered, totally consuming. I totally get his instinct to flee (fight or flight, right?).
I think that's why I'm not connecting to this narrative. Yes I see the bullshit. But it's not some big traumatic thing to me. Not something deserving of months and years of interviews, filming, books, comments, netflix series. It is to Harry though and if I view it through his lens, it makes more sense.
Also, the fact that they started filming themselves years ago smells like a plan. Releasing very personal, private photos while claiming privacy motivated their actions smacks of manipulation (to put it kindly).
So far, the series is just a PR package to me. That makes me find them annoying.
Having said all of that, I really do hope they end up happy and together. He deserves to be happy. She deserves her prince. Plus, they make cute kids.

i don't know if they said they wanted privacy but i do remember them saying they didn't want to be hounded by the press. the 'privacy' thing was the press' spin on stuff.
the pics released (i've just seen the first half and not the second) just seem like insta pics so i didn't think it was a big deal.
what you guys are saying about harry/diana & william/charles makes sense. i don't connect with them or their story because i would personally loathe to document my life in a public way. plus i do find meghan's personality grating. not a hater, just her pretentious speech patterns in her podcast turned me off.

I think this thing would have been a hit if they'd saved it all for the show instead of blowing their wad for goddamned Oprah

i finished watching it, well most of it anyway, i had it on in the background and would tune in when it sounded like it was getting interesting, which wasn't often. it really should have been 3 episodes at most, and even that was stretching it. the racism, the royal family closing ranks against the outsider and not hesitating to throw h&m to the wolves to save the institution, none of that is a surprise. samantha's daughter was pretty much the only surprise, that and harry explicitly blaming william and charles for a lot of what happened. but overall it was boring. and yes, they're clearly in love but also self-absorbed and kind of obnoxious and she's definitely into presenting a very curated version of themselves that makes her seem fake and, like i've said before, like a very specific type of american woman that's all about the perfect wedding, and family photos, and giving off the perfect family image. and the whole calling harry 'my love', wtf? i guess they have to sell the h&m brand but still.
