Is "the Church" paying for his defense? I'm trying to figure out why the lawyers keep talking about keeping "the Church" out of this. Oddly, I just assumed they were paying. Sci is going to keep paying for appeals into the 24th century. What a mess. There are, of course, other contenders, but at this moment in time, I'm pretty sure Scientology is the Evil Empire.

According the recent breaking news here in LA, there’s been a mistrial. Stay tuned. Jury was “hopelessly deadlocked”. Looks like they got to one of them.

But this is the Scientology way - delay, try to exhaust the opposition with legal motions, delay some more. Yep. That’s totally their way. I think people underestimate how much influence they seem to have in LA. Now, they probably feel even more untouchable because the new mayor, Karen Bass, has been linked to Scientology. She’s not a Scientologist, but she spoke at a big Scientology event. Praising L. Ron. I thought that was the nail in her coffin, but nope, she won.

I can't verify this, since I found it on twitter, but here's the jury votes, looks like more jurors were voting not guilty.
Count 1: 2 for guilty, 10 not guilty Count 2: 4 for guilty, 8 not guilty Count 3: 5 for guilty, 7 not guilty
With numbers like that, who knows if they will retry.

Danny Masterson rape case declared a mistrial By Marjorie Hernandez and Andy Tillett November 30, 2022 6:53pm Updated A judge declared a mistrial in the Danny Masterson rape case Wednesday, as the jury could not reach a decision on whether the actor was innocent or guilty. Masterson, 46, had been charged with three counts of forcible rape over incidents that occurred between 2001 to 2003 involving three accusers. During the five-week trial, jurors heard testimony including one woman who said she thought she was “going to die” when she claimed the former “That ’70s Show” star choked and raped her in April 2003. Following the mistrial, prosecutors must now make a decision on whether to retry Masterson, a decision they have to reach by March 2023. Although Scientology was not a defendant in the trial, the victims — who were members of the religion at the time of the incidents — testified about the fear and alienation they felt about reporting Masterson, a prominent member of the Church. The alleged victims also claimed the religious practices they followed at the time didn’t allow them to think the incidents were rape. EXCLUSIVE: Danny Masterson arrives to court with his wife Bijou Phillips this morning in downtown LA. The actor's sexual assault trial is currently in the jury deliberation stage. Nothing ever happens to you without it being your fault.”

That picture of him leaving makes my skin crawl. He looks so smug.
The courtroom sketch of the three women holding hands says a lot.

I can’t stand him or his wife. She has a history of defending rapists; she doesn’t believe that her sister Mackenzie was raped by their father.

Well what a surprise.... Church of Scientology accessed tranche of criminal discovery material in rape retrial of actor Danny Masterson, including emails between police and his accusers, DA says
Masterson, a Scientologist, is accused of raping three women in the early '00s
Evidence has been obtained by the Church even though it is not party to the case
The material includes text messages, police reports and photos, the DA said
The Church of Scientology obtained a swathe of criminal discovery material relating to the rape trial of Danny Masterson, including emails between police and 'victims', a court has heard. Masterson, the former star of That '70s Show and a Scientologist himself, is accused of raping three women between 2001 and 2003. One victim has claimed the actor drugged, choked, and raped her after throwing her in the Jacuzzi at his Hollywood Hills home. But the Deputy District Attorney Reinhold Mueller told the trial judge on Wednesday that a tranche of criminal discovery material has ended up in the hands of The Church of Scientology, even though it is not a party in the case. Mueller said that on May 2 his office was sent an email by Church attorney Vicki Podberesky titled 'False reports of stalking by the Church of Scientology'. 'In the attachments, I don't want to say all of our discovery, but a large amount of our discovery was attached to these files,' Mueller said. 'Emails between law enforcement and victims. Text messages. Police reports. Photos. We weren't able to get through all the attachments, but it's extremely troubling that all of our redacted discovery we turned over to the defense is now in the hands of Scientology.' Judge Olmedo asked Masterson's defense attorney, Phillip Cohen, if he had been 'sharing discovery with the Church of Scientology', which he denied, The Underground Bunker reported. Olmedo issued 'an order to show cause', but said this would have to wait until after the trial. Scientology spokeswoman Karin Pouw insisted to DailyMail.com that the church is not a party in the Masterson case. 'The prosecution's insertion of religion into this matter is blatantly unconstitutional,' she said. 'Nevertheless, the District Attorney has unconscionably centered his prosecution on religion and fabrications about the Church hoping to prejudice the jury and inflame bigotry.' 'The Church has no policy prohibiting or discouraging members from reporting criminal conduct of anyone.' The proceedings in Los Angeles are part a retrial of Masterson's rape charges after a deadlocked jury led to a mistrial last year. Earlier this month, a woman identified in court as Jane Doe 1 said she was drugged and raped by Masterson at his LA home in April 2003. She said she told the Church of Scientology, whose leader is David Miscavige, about the alleged rape, but was punished for reporting it. The woman claimed she was told by the Church that if she went to the police she'd be declared a 'suppressive person' - and that she was forced to undertake therapy to understand how she had caused the rape. On cross-examination, the defense showed the jury bikini photos of Jane Doe 1 taken five days after the alleged rape and asked them if she could have been in pain if she was smiling on a family holiday. Masterson has pleaded not guilty to the charges. Jane Doe 1 told the jury that Podberesky had 'stared' at her during her testimony. 'She represents the Church of Scientology and David Miscavige and every witness that we needed to testify,' she said. Attorneys with Podberesky's law firm and another firm representing Scientology in the civil lawsuit, were present for nearly every day of the first trial. The case continues and is expected to go to the jury next week. Source - Daily Mail
