Every time I come to this thread I get more pissed off. Can you imagine getting a diagnosis like this and then having the world find out, not on your terms, but from someone that you trusted (and that the law required!) to keep it private?
I'm with Novice - there must be consequences.

^^ that’s true. I hope not. Poor guy. If so, I hope they know who had access to his records.

^^ that’s true. I hope not. Poor guy. If so, I hope they know who had access to his records. With everything being computerised and everyone having individual log ins whoever did this would likely be caught pretty quickly if/when the subject of the BI found out and made a complaint to his/her healthcare provider.

Absolutely, Kittylady. Everything that's typed in patient docs leaves a 'footprint'. It's easy to find out when access to a patient's notes is enacted and by whom. It shouldn't take long to find out, in this gentleman's case who was responsible- they must lose their job, for such a flagrant misuse of highly confidential information, forthwith! Jeez, in my almost 30 years, in the NHS, I've even pretended to people that I don't know if any of their family/friends is/are in the hospital! It's just not allowed and is more than my job's worth! My own ward is on ground level, and I had to fight to have the windows covered in special coating in order to stop people from looking in. Anyone who passes by thinks the windows are mirrors, the number of people who stop and preen- while me and my patients are on the other side of the window laughing our asses off!

My daughter is a medical assistant here in the US. She has access to every patient's charts. She was telling me that some patients have an extra level of security in order to access their charts and you need specific credentials to do so. If this is true in this case, the person who leaked this will most definitely be found out.

She was telling me that some patients have an extra level of security in order to access their charts and you need specific credentials to do so. If this is true in this case, the person who leaked this will most definitely be found out. I worked in a sensitive area for a while and the system recorded the log in ID of everyone who accessed a client's record. If someone saw that you had accessed a record without a professional reason to be in there you would be out of the door. Certain records were watched more closely than others - in our case, if the client was in the system for a particularly serious or sensitive issue, especially one that had attracted press attention, then any admin related to that record was assigned to an individual and nobody else touched it. Data protection is taken very, very seriously.
