I've been seeing this in the news a lot over the past few days. I think they said Columbia has gotten this rank 5 years running....? (I think a lot of it is due to MikeSandy's heroic work as a civic activist!)

RANKED: St. Louis, Fort Lauderdale and San Bernardino are rated as America’s most UNSAFE cities, on scale of crimes, car crashes, disasters, joblessness and more. Want better? Move to Columbia, Maryland
St. Louis, Missouri, ranked as the least safe city in a list of 182
Columbia, Maryland, often lauded for its quality of life, ranks top
Other low scorers were Fort Lauderdale, Florida, San Bernardino, California, Detroit, Michigan, and Baton Rouge, Louisiana
Study uses 42 indicators, covering everything from wildfires to the number of uninsured drivers on the road
Also measured were crime rates, joblessness, and Covid-19 vaccination rates
'Some cities are simply better at protecting their residents from harm,' said researchers
Columbia, Maryland, has been ranked as the safest city in America, and St. Louis, Missouri, as its most dangerous, in a new survey that measures everything from the threat of wildfires to the number of uninsured drivers on the road.
Topping the list was Columbia, Maryland, a Tsuburban area between Washington DC and Baltimore that is home to some 100,000 people and often scores well for quality of life, opportunity and relatively low crime rates.
Other high scorers were Nashua, New Hampshire, Laredo, Texas, Portland, Maine and Warwick, Rhode Island, according to researchers at WalletHub, a personal finance website.
The worst-ranked city, St. Louis, Missouri, is famed for The Gateway Arch. Though the city of some 300,000 people ranks as liveable and lively on some scales, it also suffers from relatively high rates of violent crime, racial tensions and other woes.
Other low scorers were Fort Lauderdale, Florida, San Bernardino, California, Detroit, Michigan, and Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
‘Threats to safety in the US come in many forms, from the continued presence of the Covid-19 pandemic and natural disasters to mass shootings and traffic accidents,’ the researchers said in a statement.
‘Some cities are simply better at protecting their residents from harm.’
The study by WalletHub assessed 182 major cities on 42 measures of safety — broadly covering crime rates, natural disasters, Covid-19 vaccination rates and economic indicators, like levels of unemployment and homelessness.
The study comes as public safety and law and order remain top issues for voters in November's midterm elections, and soft-on-crime policies and calls to defund police could hurt Democrats in some crime-plagued cities.
