Two planes carrying migrants were sent by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to Martha’s Vineyard on Wednesday night, his office said, infuriating Democratic politicians and prompting a frenzied response that included humanitarian aid by locals and assistance by Massachusetts officials.

It’s the latest in a series of moves by Republican governors to transport migrants to northern liberal enclaves to protest what they say are inadequate federal efforts on southern border security. Located off the coast of Massachusetts and long known as a posh summer destination for wealthy vacationers, Martha’s Vineyard provided an unusual and unexpected place for the migrants to be sent.

Lawmaker says DeSantis used migrants for his own political benefit

“We are not a sanctuary state, and it’s better to be able to go to a sanctuary jurisdiction, and yes, we will help facilitate that transport for you to be able to go to greener pastures,” DeSantis said on Thursday, a day after claiming credit for sending the two planes to the island. “Every community in America should be sharing in the burdens. It shouldn’t all fall on a handful of red states.”


An estimated 50 migrants arrived on Martha’s Vineyard Wednesday on two planes, according to Massachusetts state Sen. Julian Cyr, a Democrat who represents Martha’s Vineyard. The two planes arrived just after 3 p.m. ET, Cyr said, and white vans took the migrants to Martha’s Vineyard Community Services.

James Hagerty, the Edgartown town administrator, told CNN on Thursday that officials believe all the migrants originated in Venezuela, and a local fire chief said earlier that day that the migrants include seven families, with four children ranging from 3 to 8 years old.
At least 140 asylum seekers arrived in New York Sunday on buses in what the New York City Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs is calling the largest single-day arrival of migrants from Texas, according to a spokesperson.


“There was no advance notice to anyone in Martha’s Vineyard or Massachusetts that these migrants were arriving to my knowledge,” Cyr said.

Municipal officials and state officials are in touch about next steps, but Cyr stressed that the focus right now is supporting the migrants who arrived.

In addition to response efforts by locals on the island, the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency is expected to be on the ground to coordinate efforts.

Terry MacCormack, press secretary for Republican Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker, said in a statement obtained by CNN affiliate WBZ, “The Baker-Polito Administration is in touch with local officials regarding the arrival of migrants in Martha’s Vineyard. At this time, short-term shelter services are being provided by local officials, and the Administration will continue to support those efforts.”




“Even for Ron DeSantis, this is a new low,” Florida Democratic Chair Manny Diaz said in a statement. “There is nothing that DeSantis won’t do, and nobody that he won’t hurt, in order to score political points.”

Charlie Crist, the Democratic nominee for governor of Florida, said in a statement, “This is just another political stunt that hurts our state. Tonight, the 4.5 million immigrants who call Florida home must be wondering if they’re next.”

And the White House on Thursday denounced both DeSantis’ move and a decision by Republican Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas to intentionally send two buses of migrants to Vice President Kamala Harris’ residence in the nation’s capital.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre accused the governors of using migrants as “political pawns” and said their actions amounted to a “cruel, premeditated political stunt.”

The latest moves follow in the footsteps of Republican Gov. Doug Ducey of Arizona, who began sending migrants to Washington, DC, earlier this year. Abbott has since expanded his effort to include New York City and Chicago.


Migrants released from government custody often move to other cities in the US as they go through their immigration proceedings. It’s unclear whether the migrants who arrived in Martha’s Vineyard knew where they were going.


Despite the unannounced arrivals, some residents of the island worked quickly to provide some key services.

“This is a community rallying to support immigrants children and families. It is the best of America,” Massachusetts state Rep. Dylan Fernandes, a Democrat who represents the island, said in a series of tweets that included photos of the migrants receiving food and beds.

“Our island jumped into action putting together 50 beds, giving everyone a good meal, providing a play area for the children, making sure people have the healthcare and support they need,” Fernandes wrote in another tweet. “We are a community that comes together to support immigrants.”


Officials on Martha’s Vineyard say they are working with a coalition on the island to provide “shelter, food, and care to individuals” who arrived on the island Wednesday, according to a statement from the county Emergency Management Association.

The Edgartown Police Department said no further supplies are needed for migrants who arrived Wednesday and asked that people refrain from dropping off additional items in order to keep traffic flowing.

A Martha’s Vineyard Community Service media representative helping to coordinate services for the migrants praised the community response, saying some local restaurants are offering free food.

The resources from a programmatic standpoint include coordinating food, clothing, and translator services, the representative said.

The migrants slept at St. Andrew’s Church Wednesday night, which often assists in housing those in need, the representative explained.

Some of the migrants Thursday morning reported feeling cold and the service center assisted in bringing over more clothes, the representative said.

Meanwhile, Hagerty said on Thursday that the migrants were allegedly told before arriving on the island that they would be provided with jobs and housing there.

“They had community service packets provided to them before they got off plane,” he said, adding that he wasn’t sure what third party provided the packets of information to the migrants.

Gave them a place to sleep, food, clothing, resources for the kids, and help finding immigration attorneys. Maybe they don’t realize it now, but this is a gift to them.

Here's what I don't get. People are bitching about how no one wants to work. People come to the border as a safe haven to come here and work. So why don't we make it legal for them to come in and get them employed. I don't understand the border issue. Seems like a very simple solution.

I don’t know about Florida’s reasoning, but TX border towns are poor, and overwhelmed. They simply don’t have the resources to deal with the migrant influx. I know someone who lives in Del Rio and there’ve been thousands of migrants, not just 50 like in the article.

A solution has to be found, but I strongly oppose border walls because they cause environmental havoc by disrupting migration routes, and should be taken down. And just to clarify, I detest the current TX government and I despise desatan.

Also, Martha's Vineyard is so expensive that "ordinary" people can no longer afford to rent or buy new there. They drive long distances to service the rich - this included hospital staff (Inc doctors).

Two buses carrying migrants and asylum seekers have arrived near the home of United States Vice President Kamala Harris in Washington, DC, in what critics have denounced as an effort by Republicans to use migrants as “political pawns” ahead of midterm elections.

Greg Abbott, the Republican governor of Texas, said in a statement on Thursday that 100 migrants from Colombia, Cuba, Guyana, Nicaragua, Panama, and Venezuela were dropped off near Harris’s residence.


“Texas will continue sending migrants to sanctuary cities like Washington, DC until President [Joe] Biden and Border Czar Harris step up and do their jobs to secure the border,” Abbott said.

Harris was appointed last year by Biden, a Democrat, to lead his administration’s efforts to stem migration at the US’s southern border with Mexico, which has seen a surge in asylum seeker arrivals in recent months.

Al Jazeera’s Heidi Zhou-Castro, reporting outside of Harris’s home on Thursday, said about 100 people carrying only a few belongings came out of the buses after a journey that was longer than 30 hours.

She said an infant and another person who is diabetic were taken directly to the hospital. The others were taken to a nearby church where they were given food and shelter before volunteers assisted them in reaching their next destinations, Zhou-Castro said.

Aid workers who responded at the scene said “this was yet another humiliation that these people, who are trying to escape violence and poverty in Latin America, were made to suffer on a journey that is at times already dehumanising”, Zhou-Castro reported.

Since April, Abbott has been busing migrants out of Texas to Washington, DC, New York City and Chicago – cities with Democratic mayors – as part of a political strategy to denounce the Biden administration’s immigration policies, which Abbott argues are encouraging arrivals in his state.

Arizona Governor Doug Ducey has adopted the same policy.

The Republican governors say the effort is aimed at highlighting the record number of migrants trying to cross into the US through its southern borders, and to share the burden of hosting asylum seekers.

Texas is often the first destination for migrants crossing from Mexico, and Abbott has said that sending people to other parts of the country will provide relief to Texas border communities.

“We’re sending migrants to [Harris’s] backyard to call on the Biden administration to do its job & secure the border,” he tweeted.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a Republican, also recently joined the effort. On Wednesday, he flew two planes of immigrants to Martha’s Vineyard, a wealthy summer holiday destination in the US state of Massachusetts.

“Yes, Florida can confirm the two planes with illegal immigrants that arrived in Martha’s Vineyard today were part of the state’s relocation programme to transport illegal immigrants to sanctuary destinations,” Taryn Fenske, the governor’s communications director, told Fox News Digital.

“Martha’s Vineyard residents should be thrilled about this. They vote for sanctuary cities – they get a sanctuary city of their own,” Christina Pushaw, a spokesperson for DeSantis’s re-election campaign, said on Twitter.

“Sanctuary cities” is a term that refers to municipalities that do not cooperate with federal authorities seeking to detain or deport undocumented immigrants.

But several state and local officials, as well as migration rights advocates, have condemned the Republican effort as “evil and inhumane”.

Earlier this month, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot accused Abbott of “manufacturing a human crisis” by sending “human beings — not cargo, not freight, but human beings — across the country to an uncertain destination”.

Massachusetts state Representative Dylan Fernandes, a Democrat who represents Martha’s Vineyard, said on Twitter that the immigrants had arrived without warning.

“Many don’t know where they are. They say they were told they would be given housing and jobs. Islanders were given no notice but are coming together as a community to support them,” Fernandes said on Twitter.

“Republicans who call themselves Christians have been plotting for some time to use human lives – men, women, and children – as a political pawns [sic]. It is evil and inhumane,” he also wrote.

Meanwhile, Washington, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser last week declared a public emergency over the continued arrival of buses of migrants.

The district earlier requested US National Guard assistance to help stem a “growing humanitarian crisis” prompted by the arrival of thousands of migrants, but the Pentagon rejected the request.

ummm no offence but you have no idea what you're talking about. liberals are the ones - the only ones - trying to 'fix' the issue, including through strictly regulated legal migration while also giving people here illegally (many of whom were born here and don't belong anywhere else) a pathway to legal residence, like the DREAM program that trump and his crony judges got reversed. or through foreign investment, so that you can attack the root causes of illegal migration (poverty and violence and lack of opportunities in the countries of origin, because as long as those countries don't improve, people will continue to try to cross the border even if it means risking their lives). not to mention the fact that US foreign policy has a lot to answer for in terms of why these countries are the way they are. decades of financing and staging coups, overthrowing democratically elected governments and interfering in these countries' affairs during the cold war in order to keep out 'socialism' (i.e the very development programs that would have improved the education, healthcare and economic situations in these countries all to counter alleged soviet influence during the cold war and really mostly to defend the economic interests of american companies like the united fruit company (now chiquita banana) and others... so they would fund military coups that would result in sometimes decades of corrupt and authoritarian military dictatorships (many handpicked in Washington DC) and repression in the countries that - surprise! - are now impoverished and people have no choice but to head north in search of a better life. 

it's easy to say they need to address issues in a bipartisan manner but i recommend reading obama's autobiography and realising how republicans make bipartisanship impossible and have for years now. every time obama and the democrats tried to deal with any issue with the republicans, they stonewalled and refused to even engage. the only ones trying to be bipartisan are the democrats, and that has been the case for years.
even john mccain, at one point (before running for president) had more moderate and constructive views on migration but had to change his tune and switch to the tea party line of close the borders and keep them out to appeal to republican voters, and that kind of xenophobic bullshit might make the racists happy during election cycles but it's not a tenable, or realistic, long-term strategy to deal with migration, just like putting children in cages and separating families isn't either.

I was born here, so I am not an immigrant, and I have no idea what I am other than I assume human, as I am adopted. I guess the correct term for the topic would be illegal alien but no human is illegal so I hate that term.

I don't see liberals doing jack. No politician is or has solved this problem. I am just a powerless citizen who can barely help herself. And my only political focus right now is abortion, I'm too I'll right now to absorb too much. I will probably stick to the celebrity threads.
