You know, she really was so pretty. Still thirsty, performative, and vapid, but truly pretty. That's it. Novice, thanks for the additional material, but I still don't see anything that indicates who started this hot mess in the first place. For example, who owned the camera (or whatever it was) on which the videos were taken? Who had possession after that? Who leaked initial clips?
It seems like some celebs realize after one of these gets out that they have very little control except for making sure they get some kind of compensation for it.
The only celeb I've ever seen who shut this down quickly and permanently, was Colin Farrell's videos with Nicole Narain. He was threatening to sue the bejesus out of everyone right and left, and it seems like it worked.

Paris Hilton's tape was released in 2004 & Kardashian in 2007 so maybe they judged that it hadn't damaged PH?

Yes, I think the fact that Paris was able to recover from it probably gave some guidance. I don't know if Paris ever got a cut of it, though. I think Paris has actually said she considered committing suicide when it first came out. She was already well known, too, because of her family. I think Kim Kardashian was barely a blip and was a hanger-on friend of Hilton, along with being a daughter of Robert Kardashian (lawyer and friend of OJ Simpson). |

Kim K was either Paris Hilton's assistant or stylist or something. She was def a nobody before this tape was released.
PH claims her tape was sold by Rick Salomon 3 years after they broke up and she got nothing for it. (I don't think that's true though but she wasn't involved in the original deal) She claims she was humiliated and suffered PTSD because of it. Whether any of it is true, or an attempt to re-write history in her favor, who knows.

i tend to believe paris hilton because unlike kim and kris, she truly had nothing to gain from the release of the tape. she was already a pretty huge star and i could see how the tape was a negative thing for her.
with kim, it did the opposite because she was at best famous adjacent and the tape made her a household name, which kris was then able to capitalise on. i think kris knew that, and had the example of paris' tape before her. at worst, if it backfired, kim wouldn't lose much and would go back to being unknown and rich. but if it worked, it would make her famous. i can see kris taking that risk.

Probably so. She was doing The Simple Life at the time I think, and already well-known. The only thing that makes me raise an eyebrow is how those girls (her and Lindsay Lohan come to mind) were photographed flashing their cooches, for attention I guess. When I first saw one of Paris getting out of a car with her dress hiked up, I was sure it was a doctored photo. But apparently not.

flashing your cooch or your boobs or any other body part, on your terms and because you want to, isn’t the same as a sex tape and doesn’t mean you’re ok with having a sex tape released which is a whole other level of intimacy/vulnerability.. I really don’t think you can make that parallel.

Or, you know, take the non judgemental, pragmatic route and just pass laws that make it illegal to sell or publish those sex tapes without all parties’ consent… it’s not that hard. Or shouldn’t be. But it’s a puritanical society.

Society in general is puritanical and judgemental which is why people are more quick to blame someone for making sex tapes in the first place than the people who publish them without people’s consent, and this is also why doing so hasn’t been criminalised yet.
i also used to think that because honestly I’d never make one or understand people who do but now I think that’s beside the point.
