Highway Department Winter Storm Planning
With the potential of rain, ice and heavy snow possible with a total snow amount anywhere from 8” – 18” predicted, the Highway Department has prepared for the worst. Here are the actions they have already taken and the general guidance they will be following over the few days:
•Notifications to drivers sent out to inform them of the potential for a heavy snowfall to start early Wednesday morning.
•The drivers were given a list of staging locations if we would have to stay overnight to respond to emergency calls only. (Regular snow plowing will resume again next morning after a period of rest)
•Drivers have been supplied with a list of our recommended necessities to stay overnight for up to 48 hours.
•They have also been supplied with sleeping arrangements while inside of their staging location.
•We will be limiting our main group of drivers to 12 hour days due to DOT restraints.
•We will be working overnight with a limited crew to answer emergency calls as well.
•As we learn more about this storm’s capability we will understand better what we will need to do for the full cleanup process.
•If we do get ice first we will be out salting and plowing as necessary on main thoroughfares in the County. After those are completed we will then move into subdivisions.
•In the event that there is no ice and we receive significant snowfall we will be working as efficient as we can to have roads opened back up in a timely manner.
•We have contacted local heavy equipment/trucking companies to aide in the cleanup if needed in the event of a heavy snowfall. i.e. G.E. Marshall and Harry Brown Trucking
•There is a 2” snowfall ordinance that is in effect, this is a reminder to have your vehicles, trailers and/or any object removed from the road.
•They have had a meeting with the Sheriff’s Department, Facilities, EMA and E911 Departments so there is an understanding of the processes during this snow event.
•If we do receive the higher amounts of snowfall coupled with high winds as predicted then it could be a couple of days before we are able to make all roads passable.
•The most important things that we want to stress is the safety of our drivers and the traveling public.
•In the event of a State of Emergency we will continue to work through the days to make sure that there will be a safe and effective cleanup process.
