Sput - you mentioned a good stick vacuum back at GR1. What was it again? Anyone else have a recommendation?

I'm glad this thread is here too. Another classic. I have something to report. I, the poster with the worst, cheapest vacuum that blew the dust out and I had to wipe down the vacuum with a wet rag, got a gift. It was the kind that had a plastic canister instead of a bag. Finally got to toss it because a client gifted me her 25 year old heavy duty upright Hoover. That thing is old but has suction I haven't known in many a year. She gave me extra bags. I think I'm all about the bag. My Mom wants to give me her old Electrolux that's sitting in her closet. Before Miele's, these used to be a big deal. She remembered vacuuming while watching the wedding of the century. Charles and Di. Yes, I have a block about spending money on new vacuum.

take the electrolux. i don't see them much in the US anymore but they're still a very good brand in europe and they have a little cordless that looks even better than the miele but i don't think they sell it in the US market. not cheap at all but really great quality and very durable.

Ooh, I've heard good things about old school electrolux,I'd take it too. But I hear you on the suction of bag-having uprights, Chalet. If I had carpet, I'd want something with pearl-clutching suction too. Stick vacs don't cut it on carpets, I wouldn't think.
Sput, how long is your battery lasting on your new miele?

i haven't timed it but it hasn't been an issue at all since i usually only do a room at a time but even the couple of times i've done the whole apartment, i was done before it ran out, and that includes the stairs. if i had it on max level it would probably run out before but i only use that on one area rug with very high pile, the rest of the time i'm on 2 (out of 3). so far my only criticism is that the bin could be easier to empty but it's a pretty small complaint and it's really not hard to do either.

I used to have an old school electrolux. But then lent it to someone and never got it back. Still got my two kirbys, one for upstairs one for downstairs. If they ever die, I might try something new. When I bought the first Kirby I still had a carpeted living room, now all wood floors so all those heads and attachments and carpet shampooer thingys really aren't needed anymore. But it still does the trick on hard surfaces. I also have 2 roombas for in-between cleaning because with all my animals, I really need to vacuum every day. Even though I don't.

Sputnik is going to love this. My beloved Shark Rocket Ultralight, which I believe I bought in 2015, has finally gotten to the point where it is a danger to the whole house. Originally, the problem was that the connector that let's you attach different mechanisms to the main unit broke. That was no big deal, because I only use the floor/carpet unit. I just duct taped that bad boy together and kept going.
However, for the past year or so, there has been a bad electrical connection where the cord attaches to the main unit. It would cause the unit to lose power and just shut off. If you held the cord the right way, though, you could keep it running indefinitely. Today? I was having a lot of difficulty holding the cord in a position to make it run. All of a sudden, two flaming sparks came flying out the cord, hit me in the pants, and then hit the carpet.
But you know what? This vacuum has lasted WAY longer than any other we have had and it's much easier to use, too. So, I am going right the f*ck out to buy the exact same model. And this time, I am going to treat it like the queen dowager or something, to get as much life as possible out of it.

Mo, 7 years isn’t long for a vacuum. Get a fucking Miele and you’ll have it at least 10, without sparks or duct tape. You deserve better.

Too late - just bought a new Shark Rocket this morning. And yeah, I've owned different brands and different models - Eureka, Hoover, etc. - and they lasted on average of 3-4 years. I know that when I bout my first Shark, I banned everyone else in the family from using it. I think Mrs Mo got to use it literally two times in the 7 years we had this thing.

masochist. if you can afford it, any appliance that's made in germany will be a gazillion times better than anything else. that shit's built to last.

I'm currently deciding if we need one, but if we'll go with AEG, the most german of the german brands. Miele is relying on fantastic reputation but is too expensive, and Vorwerk, well, I'm not rich enough to even look that way and nowadays Vorwerk is quasi a cult with the massivly overrated Thermomix (Kitchen Aid for people who want to show off their wealth) for a cool starting price of 1200 Euros (1186.005 US-Dollar).

There's been loads of adverts on tv lately for Miele washing machines and about how they have an expected lifespan of 20 years, so I looked up the price. Then I closed the tab very quickly in case they charged me for looking at them. A grand and up! Oooof!
I'm sure they are really good but for that price I want one to come with a laundry maid to do the washing for me.
