what music did you grow up with, and do you still listen to that music today?
I grew up with a lot of neil diamond, elton john, and also quite a bit of reggae (my mom loved bob marley, and had a lot of his music)
I don't listen to bob marley today, actually, not much neil diamond or elton john either (I like elton because he wrote some music for the lion king, but that's it)
as I grew up, I found my own taste and my own influences- parents music didn't really have an influence on what I listened too.. my first few cds were michael jackson and 2 unlimmited, so not even remotely the same tempo as someone like neil diamond

60s and 70s music, Beatles, Stones, Neil Young, Tom Petty. I had an uncle who was about 10 years older than me and he bought me my first Beatles record. I was thrilled. I liked Elton John's early stuff like Madman across the Water but not so much his later, more commercial work. I still have a big collection of vinyl from back then and yes I still listen to it.

my dad was a huge music buff and i grew up listening to all his old records.
there was the dad rock - led zeppelin, creedence, focus (kind of dad prog lol), cream, the who, the bluesier/funkier stuff like war, moody blues, sly and the family stone, the bossa nova and brazilian amazingness from that time (stan getz and joao gilberto and bebel gilberto, gilberto gil, vinicius de moraes, chico buarque, jorge ben, sergio mendes and brasil 66, etc. the folksier stuff like joan baez. and of course classics like the stones and the beatles, and quite a bit of jazz (oscar peterson, thelonious monk, miles davis). my mom loved dionne warwick and carole king (tapestry is engraved into my brain). and then in the 80s they got really into billy joel lol and there was also a lot of classical music though in that sense they were like me - i know what i like and i listen to a lot of it but i wouldn't say that i'm paticularly knowledgeable so it's more of a random thing. i'd say the big gaps, that i later filled when i started getting into music, were bob dylan, joni mitchell, and a few others.

I always have to sing out when ticket to ride comes on. I love that song

^ That's a good one.
Also wanted to say that I really liked Neil Diamond in his early days...Girl, you'll be a woman soon, cherry cherry, solitary man, kentucky woman. He also wrote some good songs for the Monkees, I'm a Believer the most famous. Then he went all adult contemporary so no, not so much. Kinda like Elton when he went all plastic fantastic. I liked their singer-songwriter days better.

I grew up in the 80s so I love most 80s stuff. My fave music is 80's metal/hair bands.

My personal first favorite band was The Osmonds in 1972 (Crazy Horses, Hold her tight, kind of rock). I think they were only good until about 1974 with their concept album, The Plan. So, I was kind of done with them by the time I was 10, LOL. Became a BeeGees fan at 11 in 1975 when my little pre-teen self got a huge crush on Barry Gibb either in the Nights on Broadway or Jive Talkin' clip. Liked The Three Degrees; we used to try and do their routines (me and 2 friends). All in all I've always fallen for groups/performers who were great vocalists and had cool harmonies.

This is hilarious. I was just watching Linda Ronstadt singing "I Can't Let Go" on YouTube. So, she was definitely one. I have twin nieces who look like pre-school versions of her, LOL.
I love how she just walks right up to the microphone here and flawlessly belts out a studio-quality version of the song:

Ronstadt is one of the most talented people in music, ever. There's a recent doc about her and the fact that Parkinson's has taken away her voice, you should look it up...she's a true legend.

My mom always had the radio on when I was growing up (1951-1972) and I remember classics and crooners the most. Had my own radio in my room from when I was 12 so I got to listen to the top 40 and had 2 buttons on the car radio when I started driving in 1968. I was 12 when The Beatles came along and an avid fan until they got into psychedelic stuff that frankly scared innocent me. Took me getting married and discovering pot to appreciate their later work!

I grew up listening to my parents' 60/70s rock...Elton John, The Beatles, Rolling Stones. I'm an 80s-90s kid so lots of hair bands and some grunge.
