Bruce Willis Has Been Diagnosed With Aphasia And Is Leaving Acting

Actor Bruce Willis has been diagnosed with aphasia after struggling with health issues recently. The family has released a statement through his ex wife Demi Moore's Instagram to share the news that he will be stepping away from acting.


The post reads:



To Bruce’s amazing supporters, as a family we wanted to share that our beloved Bruce has been experiencing some health issues and has recently been diagnosed with aphasia, which is impacting his cognitive abilities. As a result of this and with much consideration Bruce is stepping away from the career that has meant so much to him.

This is a really challenging time for our family and we are so appreciative of your continued love, compassion and support. We are moving through this as a strong family unit, and wanted to bring his fans in because we know how much he means to you, as you do to him.

As Bruce always says, “Live it up” and together we plan to do just that.

Aphasia, as the family mentioned above, is defined as the loss of ability to understand or express speech, caused by brain damage. Although we have not been told when Willis' cognitive abilities have started to suffer, his diagnosis has come recently.



The 67-year-old actor has a long standing career in Hollywood. Playing leading roles in the Die Hard series as well as appearing in films like Pulp Fiction, The Fifth Element, The Sixth Sense, Sin City and more.

DAMN! That's so awful. My dad had global aphasis after his stroke. I'm glad that Bruce has such strong family having his back, he'll need so much help. It's such a lonely, sad and frigthening condition.

Wow, that is sad and unexpected news. Yeah, strokes or accidents are usually the cause of Aphasia. I don't know if they call it aphasia when Alzheimer (or other types of dementia) patients begin losing their language skills. They speak of health issues, so it probably was not caused by an accident but rather an illness. Sad.

Sad news... I really feel for him. Also I think there was another thread on GR, about where he spent Covid isolation and some of you suspected him to have a medical condition/ in need of care?

Few people suffering with Neurocognitive Disorders, such as dementia, experience complete loss of language.  It's far more common to have a mild form of aphasia and it's generally isolated to retrieval of information such as names or words.  Primary progressive aphasia is very uncommon but most often found in Neurodengerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's or Parkinson's.  Even then it's generally at the end stages of the disease process where complete loss of receptive and expressive lanaguage.


Dementia (disorder) and Alzheimer's (disease) are not interchangeable as most people use the terms.

It often is progressive and permanent. But there are several types of Aphasia and some therapies include sort of work-arounds to help patients communicate.

It is not often progressive unless it's the form called primary progressive aphasia most commonly found in neurodegenerative diseases.  Think about people that have had a stroke and struggle with language immediately after.  Many will stay at baseline, some regain better or more speech and very few will have full recovery. Those that have multiple strokes and continued cerebral damage to language centers will *potentially* have further issues with language.

I don’t know, but apparently he’s made a bunch of really crappy movies lately. If he does have early dementia, his motivation was probably to make as much money as possible while he still could.
