How is Gosling nominated but not Margot Robbie? And Ferrara? She was fine, but nothing special, how does she get a momination? She was the highlight of that movie, she WAS Barbie, period. Year after year I'm remembered why I think the Oscars are a bunch of crap rewards distributed by shrivelled old white dudes in a penguin suit, way too many good movies and actors are snubbed because it's not artsy enough or whatever the shit. I did not particularly enjoy Barbie, but Robbie's performance was stellar and she deserved that nomination.

I've only seen a couple of moments of Barbie. I don't understand Robbie not being nominated, especially because she was an executive producer, who I believe, recruited Gerwig to direct - I think that would have been another inducement to nominate her. Ferrera already was nominated for awards for her role by a bunch other organizations (including Critic's Choice). I don't think the movie is at all the type of work that the Oscar's would recognize, but that's probably because I haven't watched it. More kitschy than artsy.
I think there are 4 African Americans and 1 Native American as nominees this year.

Strange that Margot and Greta are not nominated, but I have heard some viewers leave her out of the conversation and praise Ken and Weird Barbie instead.
I really like Mark Ruffalo, but I thought his accent was pretty bad in Poor Things.

ok, barbie was fun but personally i don't think any of the actors deserved oscar nominations, and not because the actors aren't crazy talented. and if you did have to nominate someone, i agree it should have been margot. i love america ferrara but she put in better performances in 'ugly betty' than her role in barbie. what the fucking fuck? greta gerwig did however deserve to be nominated for directing, and not because the movie made a billion dollars, i don't think box office success has anything to do with it, unless you create a separate category for movies that make the most money. as usual, the academy continues to have fucking crazy issues with women directors.
also, where the fuck is rosamund pike for 'saltburn'? actually where is 'saltburn' at all? because barry keoghan also deserved a nod and frankly emerald fennell deserved a nod for best director as well.
and where the fuck is may december? julianne moore and natalie portman put in two of the best performances of the year. and where is todd haynes in the best director category?
i'm fucking perplexed by the whole list.

I think Barbie got nominated for the same reason that Avatar did - because it was some kind of worldwide phenomenon. I realize that is a TERRIBLE reason to nominate a movie. But maybe the industry has to kind of throw a sop to a film that gets a bunch of people to go out to movie theaters again, because this movie certainly did that. And because Gerwig and Robbie basically visualized and spearheaded and executed it, it is pretty crazy to not nominate them. But Robbie is basically getting a nomination because of Best Picture and her being a producer. And Gerwig is getting nominated for screenplay. Sometimes that is the consolation prize. I only know about "Saltburn" because of Sputnik and Jacob Elordi hosting SNL last weekend. But I can't wait to see it. I love Rosamund Pike. The plot description sounds like "Killing of a Sacred Deer" crossed with "The Talented Mr. Ripley".

Yeah, from skimming the plot, I totally love the idea of it -- offbeat, unpredictable.... It kind of reminds me, I've been watching "Beau is Afraid" every time I'm flipping through cable channels and it's on. It is just so genuinely weird. Wikipedia introduces it as a "surrealist tragicomedy horror film". I think people were p*ssed when they first watched it, but it's already being reevaluated and has high critical and audience scores.

^^^^^ i've been curious about that one, mostly because john waters picked it as his favourite movie of 2023 but yeah it sounds like the type of genre-defying movie that confuses audiences and critics alike. and academy members too, apparently, because that's the only explanation i can think of for why may december was so thoroughly snubbed.

Agree with everyone about the bs nominations this year. I am extremely perplexed that they shut out Saltburn. Barry Keoghan is an odd motherfucker, but he was (literally?) balls (and everything else) to the wall with that performance and he pulled it off with out it being hacky. And I love Rosamund Pike on any day, but she was amazing in Saltburn...I don't hate Emily Blunt, but she only had like three lines in Oppenheimer (it feels like to me) and she was amazing, but...Florence Pugh, on the other hand, I remember just about every second she was on the screen and yet...
Well, I guess there is one scene where Emily did have a lot of dialog, and it is remarkable, but I still prefer Florence's performance.

florence was amazing in oppenheimer.
i am only halfway through saltburn. the bathtub scene has scarred me but hopefully i will resuming watching. rosamund is awesome in it, as is barry keoghan.
i don't get why anyone was nominated for barbie, except for maybe the costumer, set designer, etc. i think the movie was meh. and agree that how popular a movie is should not dictate whether or not it gets nominated. barbie is not in the same class as lost in translation (to me).

Bathtub scene scarred me, and I had to look away for most of it. Too late. Good little movie though.
