am i the only one who HATED beef? it was disturbing, and not in a good way. I couldn't get through the first episode. I always used to confuse Maria Bello with Sally Phillips. I tried it because it was really being pushed and I figured it might be nice if I wasn't 12 months behind everyone else like usual but didn't make it through the first episode either. It just didn't grab me in any way.

I don't know how Ali Wong ever crossed my path, but I remember people not liking her - did she cheat on somebody or something? Not that it has anything to do with her performance in Beef, but I read a bunch of crap about it and came to the conclusion I wouldn't be interested in it, but apparently it got a lot of great reviews.
I do like her glasses, though.
I used to get Maria Bello mixed up with Portia de Rossi.

I've watched a bunch of her stuff, and the way I understand it is that initially when she married her ex husband (Justin), she looked kind of like a struggling standup person compared to him - he's a Harvard MBA. She said his mom wanted her to sign a prenup. I think she signed it, too. Then, the tables slowly turned and Wong started making a ton of money relative to Hakuta. Wong has joked about that even before the divorce - it was like, "Thanks, MIL!!!". She also joked about cheating, but it sounded like kind of a hormonal/midlife-crisis thing, and it was a way of contrasting the choices she has as a working second-gen Asian American as compared to her mom, who she says only talks with two men - her dad and her brother. Then, she says, by contrast that she has met the entire cast of the Avengers. And then drops a really dirty punchline...

she's very frank and unapologetic and has also been pretty upfront about shit she hates about being a mother, and that always pisses people off, especially some women, because apparently for a lot of them female solidarity means staying collectivly silent about the stuff you're not supposed to say out loud lol i think she's great because her frankness and unapologeticness also comes with a healthy dose of self-awareness so it's not like she lets herself off hook either. she just doesn't want to be a member of the martyr club.

I just don't relate/have no interest in mummy-humour. When she talks about the 1st gen Vs 2nd gen stuff she's really funny & it's very relatable (to me?). Since it turns out I'm actually 2nd gen.

^^ i usually don't either but to me at least she manages to make it universal comedy. and not that parenthood/motherhood can't be universal comedy but a lot of the time the fact that it isn't is a weakness on the part of comedians, that goes for any comedians with recurring themes and whether or not they have the ability to appeal to audiences for who that theme isn't directly relatable.

It really bothers me the criticism she gets for talking about sexual topics. She is a very earthy person in that regard and she is not describing stuff in some glamorous way. She has addressed pregnancy in the same manner. Power dynamics in marriage. Negative comments I've seen are kind of in the vein of "how dare she???" Like Reverend Lovejoy's wife shouting, "Won't somebody think of the children!!!" I want to know what is going on in peoples' heads. Her material along with Liz Miele have been really educational that way. I love the soul-bearing, vulnerable aspect, combined with humor. I think it is way more of a female comedian thing than a male one, which just feels more joke-oriented to me. I just don't relate/have no interest in mummy-humour. When she talks about the 1st gen Vs 2nd gen stuff she's really funny & it's very relatable (to me?). Since it turns out I'm actually 2nd gen. I get that. As a guy, obviously I am not a mom at all, but it makes me wonder what my own partner was hiding from me and what she was going through that she just sucked up. So, I appreciate that and think of it is as really illuminating. There is a joke from Wong about the "pepper grinder" that just blew Mrs Mo away. It's amazing what a well-thought out metaphor can do, LOL..... I also wanted to add that Wong kind of reminded me of an old coworker and friend of mine (and Mrs Mo) who used to be our HR director. She was second-generation Filipina-American and was about the same height as Wong. This coworker was SUPER theatrical and just had this laser-sharp humor and sarcasm. It was amazing to see, so that seeing Wong has been kind of a bonus for me in that regard, too.

Thanks for the insight, everybody. I have so much clutter in my head lately that I just kind of pile new-to-me people in a good basket or a bad basket without doing my research. But just as I was typing that sentence I totally fucking forgot I have seen her in something and loved her in it. She was in Paper Girls. I really loved that show so of course Prime axed it. Needless to say, I haven't seen her stand up but I will check it out (mental note: pepper grinder).
