it can go really fast at that age, like one day he looks like he does in that photo and in a matter of months he's frail and tiny.
the pandemic was also really bad for a lot of older people. i know of so many people who seem to have aged overnight and at an accelerated pace from suddenly being isolated from the world. cognitive and physically just went downhill. it makes you wonder if it maybe would have been better to be more exposed to risk but have better quality of life for the time they do have left?

I think the problem, though, was that even without accepting the risks to older people, many hospitals were almost at the breaking point with patients. In retrospect, it seems like that was the biggest driving force behind the shutdown. However, I can't remember what the numbers were for rural vs. urban hospitals.

Oh I know all that I’m just thinking in terms of individuals and choices. I think if I had been caught at the beginning of the pandemic at that age and still lucid to know that at best I have a year or two of quality of life ahead of me, i would rather have taken the risk than waste that time being shut off from the world and having my mind and body go downhill fast from the isolation. I think we don’t realise what it was like because even if we were WFH we were still interacting with others and keeping our minds active and even then it did a lot of damage to a lot of peopl, including kids and teens. But older people were doubly fucked in terms not just of risk from Covid but also what the shutdown did to so many of them.

Yeah my parents isolated really early due to health issues and they were still active etc Both parents are now really showing their age but it's been 4 years, they moved house & are currently living in a hotel while they have building work down (their choice - we offered). My father is 89 this year and all of a sudden it's starting to show. My mother has lost so much weight (like 3 stone) and is starting to show her age too. It's heartbreaking.

It's easy for me to think that working from home was no biggie. I was with my wife, two kids, two inlaws and tiny obsessed-with-me dog during the entire ordeal. We probably came out of it better than before. But an isolated old person who actually craves in-person contact? I can't imagine. I think it's even led to Alzheimer's-like symptoms.

Yeah, I'm sure the lockdown (slightly) accelerated my MIL's decline, even though she already had a terminal diagnosis. Before we had to start keeping her in all the time she was still doing her best to go out to places and do things/walk the dog/see people. After a month or two of shielding she started staying in bed more and more because what was the point in getting up and getting dressed? Nobody could visit her except us and she didn't need to wear anything nice to get a phone call from her friends. By the time everywhere was starting to open up again she was pretty much in bed full time and lost most of the strength in her legs. Funnily enough, before the world went to hell (and with the wisdom of old people who've seen it all before) she'd always pushed back hard against any attempts to get her to slow down and stay home more because "once someone stops going out then they are one step from their bed being moved downstairs, and when the bed comes downstairs then it's as good as done."

You didn't need to be old for lock down to do a number on you if you had to isolate alone. Not everyone is the same of course.

Okay, I'll start: Ordinary guesses:Sophia Loren (and I hate it) Shannon Doherty (I really hope I'm wrong here) King Harald of Norway Random:Kanye West Good new rules, thank you Kittylady!
You picked Shannon first but I think tulip won with Donald Sutherland

Yeah, she won, but even if not, I'd give it to tulip, I sooooo wanted to be wrong about Shannon.

One point to loftybike for being the first to name Shannen Doherty, but tulip is on a killing spree, gaining two points for being the first to name Donald Sutherland and Bob Newhart. Keep this up tulip and we might have to report you to the authorities... We have had a few duplicate names come up in the thread so if any of you beside lofty and tulip guessed Donald Sutherland, Shannen Doherty or Bob Newhart AFTER they had already been picked by them then you can go back and stake your claim to a different celeb that nobody else has tagged yet, but do give the thread a quick read through first so you don't accidentally come up with another dupe.

So our current scores are: burnt_toast - one point for Iris Apfel (1st March) loftybike - one point for Shannen Doherty (13th July) tulip - two points for Donald Sutherland (20th June) and Bob Newhart (18th July) First Blood goes to burnt_toast for Iris, but tulip continues to lead with two correct guesses.
