juliette lewis wrote a really lovely instagram post where she described him as mr. rogers for all the weird, misfit kids and i thought that was the perfect description. i rewatched the pee-wee movie last year with my friend and her kids and it's still fucking brilliant. and he had memorable roles in movies like 'mystery men' (an underrated gem). That comes on all the time on cable. A coworker of mine in the late 90's had told me about the movie. The "super" powers were hilarious. William H. Macy as the "Shoverler". And I think Pee Wee was the "Spleen" or something - his superpower was some odor he could emit. I will keep it on when I'm flipping channels and see it - especially for Janeane Garogalo. I'm shallow that way.

RIP, and I've always found this guy MASSIVELY weird. I saw a tweet today that said Pee Wee was the Mr. Rogers for all the weird misfit kids and I’ve never seen a better description. When I was younger I found Mr. Rogers to be absolutely creepy and uncomfortable (I had/have some trust issues). Pee Wee was my jam.

^^^^ the casting in that movie is amazing. and don't forget tom waits as dr. heller. geoffrey rush, greg kinnear, ben stiller. so good. Very deep and eclectic cast. Lena Olin and Louise (Mary Hartman Mary Hartman) Lasser are in there, plus a bunch of others. I just thought Fred Rogers was boring. In terms of creepy, or insincere, there is a whole movie about that (starring Tom Hanks as Rogers) written by a journalist who had covered him. He emphatically maintained that Rogers was the real deal, and even helped him reconcile with his dad. That being said, the demeanor was just so with out affect.....

I was reading twitter tributes to him and it was amazing how many people considered him a friend. Even if they only worked with him once 30 years ago, he stayed in touch. The word most used to describe him was "kind". They said he never missed a birthday and always sent Christmas cards.
David Hasselhoff was his roommate in college! Who knew?

And apparently he was really good friends with Katey Sagal. Katey, Pee Wee, and the Hoff all used to hang out.
I loved Pee Wee/Paul. I thought he was brilliantly weird ❤️
