Joan Crawford did this and she had dental issues as she aged because of it. When I was younger we could tell who was from NI as they had a different dental regime. They would pull teeth instead of filling them (plus a different diet).

My Glaswegian neighbour when I was growing up had had all her teeth pulled and replaced with a set of dentures as a 21st birthday present. It was considered a kindness to avoid the pain and expense of dental problems. This must have been some time in the 1960s, so not really a super long time ago.
