In all honesty, I think playing around with helium is pretty harmless. It's an inert gas, so should not interact with your body's biochemistry. The only danger would be taking so much in that you basically suffocate. Helium is lighter than air, so as soon as you open your mouth and breathe out, it should empty from your lungs.
The dangerous one, though, is the one that our daughter and I would like to try - argon gas. Argon should do the opposite of helium - make you sound like Barry White instead of Minnie Mouse. However, because it is heavier than air, it would just sit in your lungs instead of drift out like helium. Supposedly, environments with a lot of argon (welding?) can be dangerous for workers.

you huff nitrous oxide from balloons, not helium. and it doesn't get you "high", that high feeling you get is from the cells in your brain literally dying from a lack of oxygen.
