I'm in the "always take too much" club, so I'm challenging myself to see if I can go away to a warmer climate for one week and take a carry on suitcase and a travel bag that goes under the seat. I have 3 sort of dressy events and I'll wear the same outfit and shoes. It's educational and also funny to watch the travel savvy Youtubers pack and how they never seem to take anything more formal than a summery dress that they can fold into the size of a napkin and a pair of sandals. I even watched some British butlers pack their employer's bags. I'm supposed to keep shoes to 3 pair so they suggest. Ya, ok. I'll be with family who have a washer/dryer. I always take 30 pair of underwear. I can cut that down I guess. I mean, how many bras do you take with you? My question is - the liquids thing. I read the TSA site. I've always taken my shampoo, perfume and toiletries in my checked bag. My toiletries are curated if you will - I can't replicate anything a local CVS. Maybe I'll get those plant based makeup wipes. Should I ship this stuff there tomorrow? I sound nuts. I've got a prescription mouth rinse that I have to use for the next two weeks and the bottle is 16 oz. Do I transfer the liquid into 3.4 oz bottles? I didn't understand on the TSA - do all your liquids have to fit in one quart size bag and that's it? Liquid Medications
Carry On Bags: Yes (Less than or equal to 3.4oz/100 ml allowed)
TSA allows larger amounts of medically necessary liquids, gels, and aerosols in reasonable quantities for your trip, but you must declare them to security officers at the checkpoint for inspection.I'd love to hear your packing stories. Like you went to Paris and Istanbul for two weeks with a toothbrush, a denim shirt, a little black dress and Aniston shoes. Or a tee shirt, khaki pants and a bandana. What kind of bag do you have? Thank you.

i'm pretty good, if i do say so myself. mostly thanks to all the traveling for work over the past 5 years. unless i'm going on vacation and plan to go shopping, i try not to check a bag and fit everything into a carry on. my record is fitting enough for a two week trip to paris and normandy (including a wedding weekend that required 3 different dresses) into a carry on. i even had my workout stuff (wrist weights, small pilates ball, bands). i fold everything the marie kondo way (takes up way less room) and my carry on is of the clamshell variety so all the clothes go in the half of the bag that zips closed, all folded/filed neatly to minimize wrinkles. make sure your airbnb/hotel has an iron and a hair dryer so you don't have to pack those.
know the airline rules. you're allowed one carry-on and one personal item. there are max sizes for each. my carry on is an amazing samsonite that is exactly the maximum size allowed. and my personal item is a big travel purse that is exactly the maximum size allowed for the personal item and has a strap that goes over the bar of the carry on so it sits on top of it and i don't have to carry it. that's where i put my laptop (if i'm taking it), books, jewelry, passport, wallet, makeup, pouch with chargers/cables, my plane pashmina (better than any airplane blanket) rolled up to take up minimal space, travel snacks (usually nuts), water bottle, etc. and a bit of extra room in case i do buy something.
some tips: - make a packing list ahead of time and plan your outfits so you're not stress packing at the last minute. - buy travel size bottles to transfer all your beauty products and shampoos etc to in case the original bottles are too big to meet the requirements. muji makes awesome ones and they're affordable. - minimize accessories. for the wedding, i wore 3 dresses (2 silk so you can roll them and they don't take up a lot of room, and one in a thin material that didn't wrinkle) with the same pair of gold mid-heel sandals that are both dressy and comfy and match everything. i also had one zip up cotton tote bag as an everyday purse that i could fold and pack in the carryon, and two very flat and easy to pack clutches for the wedding weekend. - put everything in pouches to keep your shit organized and so you can easily access everything without having to unpack your whole bag to reach it. i have zip up pouches in every size. i use one for toiletries, one for charger cables and plug adapters, etc., one for make up, one for underwear and socks and bras. i have a small, rigid zip up case that i put all my jewelry in when i travel (rigid cases will keep your jewelry safe and prevent it getting smushed). i also use fabric shoe bags and a fabric bag that i put all the dirty clothes in to keep them separate from the clean clothes. - for your casual clothes (or work clothes if it's a work trip) pick pieces you can mix and match. i usually pack one pair of work shoes that i wear with everything, travel in running shoes and add a pair of flip flops if i'm going to use the hotel gym/spa. - pack a swimsuit even if you don't plan to swim because there's nothing worse than arriving at a hotel with an amazing pool and not having a swimsuit. and it doesn't take up much room.

Aside from what Sputnik said the BEST thing I ever did was learn in 2018 about this packing style where you fold everything 3 times and then pack it vertically (instead of laying it flat). When you do that, you can instantly see every shirt, pair of pants/shorts, dress, that you have packed - instantly, when you open your suitcase. For me, the result has been amazing. I know exactly how many of each item I have, and what color it is for purposes of matching things.
I feel for all the women out there who also have to pack makeup and specialty items that are in different-sized bottles, etc. Keeping everything the right size is a real drag, and Mrs Mo is going through that right now as she gets ready to spend a few weeks on the other side of the planet.

Aha! Thanks. I think I heard it was her idea. And yes, I started it with clothes drawers. When I was still putting away my kids' clothes, I did their drawers the same way, too. It really was a revelation.

I'm an Army brat. We can pack better than most people. The only problem is the last time I flew (with only a small carry on) my toothpaste got confiscated because I had a full-sized tube instead of a travel-sized one. Irritating, but I thought they would let me slide again.

I could wear the same thing for two weeks. I wear one piece midi and maxi dresses, they roll small. So one on body one in small carryon. Wear jacket/ sweater/ doubles as neck rest/pillow. Couple extra socks (anklets), one pair of boots on my feet, maybe a couple extra undies. One bra on body.
One Cover Girl cream foundation, blush, blush brush, lipstick, mascara, black pen eyeliner, scented lotion. Small hand sanitizer. My pills. My charger. My phone. A book. Few snacks and water. Deodorant maybe. ( I just mooch hotel toiletries or purchase on the go, but stick a toothbrush in case). Maybe an inflatable neck cushion.
I second the plastic baggie organizing tip. It all fits in one carryon size. Now, I don't fly this is what I do to travel by bus or train. Back pack is great because you can just wear your luggage!
My best travel item is money so I can gently souse up during the train ride or bus trip lol. And feed my face. I smoke weed and vape at stops or bring gummies. I haven't the nerve to fly!! I love bus and train travel, train the most. Wish we had more!!
One tip I do if I am forced to travel heavy and check anything I tie a bright bandana like pink or yellow or purple to my luggage. That way when it's time to claim there it is!! I also take a sharpie and label my travel bag and travel backpack with my address stalkers be damned. I'm sort of on the paranoid side though, I may go overboard!!
I am always a single female traveler š I have to be cautious!! But I enjoy the different people I get to meet and hang with a long the journey. Nothing like two secret stoners stealth puffing between stops š š I hope you enjoy your travels!!!

Plus sneakers- pack a swimsuit even if you don't plan to swim because there's nothing worse than arriving at a hotel with an amazing pool and not having a swimsuit. and it doesn't take up much room. no swimming this trip, but thank you for the tip. T H A N K Y O U Y O U W O N D E R F U L W O N D E R F U L P E O P L E!I really really appreciate you taking the time writing it out. This thread will help a lot of travelers. Very very interesting about the Kondo folding. That's how I've always folded my undergarments and tanks. I was considering laying everything out flat (even socks) but I'll do it the Kondo way as you suggested. One fun fact - when Kondo first came onto the scene and I saw her on TV I was like whoa - that's exactly like the lady on YT from years ago (Linda Koopersmith). When I started offering organizing for clients back then, YT didn't have much but she was there.

I see my Tom's is 5 oz. Swine! That toothpaste is $7.00 without a CVS coupon. They're going to toss it? I'll buy one at CVS.

You just gave us a little more insight to you! You're not all Kim K. ankles I'm a single female traveler as well. I have perfected my surprised/incredulous face if and when a flight attendant bends down oh so sweetly to ask me so sweetly if I'd give up my seat so two people could sit together. I ask if it's for a child and parent or an elderly person - if it ain't, no dice. If you didn't think to book the bulkhead seat I'm so sorry. I have a bad knee and like to stretch it out when sitting a long time. Thank you very much. You're reminding me of when I'd meet people in Europe. I wasn't a Hostel traveler, I saved up to go as nice as I could afford. One girl I met was going to a hostel. We rode on the train overnight. I said share the room with me before you meet your friends tomorrow (no charge) lol.

I've been following this woman on Instagram who swears by wearing compression socks for any flight longer than 2 hours. She's young and fit but says it's the best move ever, doesn't care if they aren't stylish because they work so well. I'm buying some for my trip to LA next month. I never switch seats either, unless it's for a parent with a kid who got separated, though I'm usually traveling with my own kids and always pay the extra $$ to book seats next to each other. We had a couple ask if their friends could switch to our row last year when we went to Hawaii. We lucked out and had the 3 seats for the 2 of us. NO WAY would we give up that perk! Sorry friends. It was mentioned before, but I bought some clear bag for toiletries that's thicker than a ziplock but still allows for some shoving. It is the best, I always am able to shove much more in there than the same sized ziplock. I re-use small sample containers for my lotions and potions, just make sure to label them. Or, buy the nice travel sized containers. Finally, packing cubes save my life, I love them. I love the organization. Happy & Safe Travels, Chalet!

Truthfully, shoes are the worst. Wear your biggest shoes on the plane and back the rest. I wore my sneakers. Iām at the airport now waiting to go home. TSA coming and going was nothing at all. I packed everything perfectly with all your suggestions. From my liquids to the folding. My carry on suitcase looked like a horizontal CD rack holder. At 1 am I decided to experiment and repacked. I did the perimeter of the bag in the flat folded clothes which left a well in the center where I put my shoes. Ok, so i had a total of 4 pair including sneakers. on top of that layer i put a few more things folded flatly. Shoulder tote had vitamin roll, toiletries god help me, makeup, electronics, jewelry. I brought six necklaces. I did the preplanned outfit thing till it came to the accessories. Iām a Sagittarius- we plan and then take detours for spontaneity if you ever get to florida for a relaxing groovy place on the east west coast go to St. petersburg and Sarasota. So close to Clearwater home of Scientology. No one will ever drive me there to look around and point.
