There have been thousands of Russians arrested just for protesting the war in cities all over the country.

Tiktok The Russian foreign minister was giving a speech at the UN this morning and everyone got up and walked out. That never happens at the UN. It’s not in the news yet so I linked the Tiktok about it. yeah that's pretty unprecedented. the NYT has an article about it, someone from work just sent it to me www.nytimes.com/2022/03/01/world/europe/lavrov-speech-un.html

According to Russian sources, Putin had cancer surgery back in February 2020, and has also developed Parkinson's disease. We could therefore be dealing with a very sick terminally ill old man, who may well be willing to take the world with him: VLADIMIR Putin has cancer

i mean he may have had surgery but i think there's a tendency to dismiss putin as an irrational actor and while he may be increasingly isolated because of the pandemic, and he may have had a health scare, i think it's premature to think he's totally lost it or is too sick to function. IMO that's just wishful thinking on the part of putin's opponents and western media.

They've used at least two vaccuum bombs on Ukraine. That's a war crime. I doubt there's official news yet, but as usual, you get the real news from real people on reddit and twitter and tiktok. I was wondering why the Hague had started war crimes investigations so soon and this is probably why.

I wish the people of Russia would finally unite and stand up against little Vladimir like what happened in 1989 to Ceaucescu. If you think that is going to happen you are incredibly naïve. Their President is a super-paranoid KGB officer that rules the media, the opposition, everyone with an iron fist. Anyone speaking out is killed, disappears or their family does. Have you not heard about Alexander Litvinenko, and Sergei Skripal and his daughter, Yulia Skripal being poisoned in the UK in retribution for their actions??? Not even being outside Russian guarantees your safety. Greys - there was information about the vacuum bomb on BBC News this morning - it might be that the US is just catching up due to time differences. www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-60571395The NYT has a paywall I can’t breach so for others like me here is the Reuters page www.reuters.com/world/eu-us-british-envoys-boycott-lavrov-speech-un-rights-forum-2022-03-01/

I said I wish it would happen. Of course Putin cannot be compared to Ceaucescu, that's a no brainer. Putin is the Devil's evil twin. I think that if you speak to the older people in Romania they will say that Ceausescu was the devil’s twin also; however there was a time, a movement that worked in some of the Eastern bloc countries. the Russian landmass has different time zones, different countries and cultures. One may see it as “Russia” but it is a thousand smaller countries. also Putin is super well guarded, doesn’t go out in public, etc etc etc. The flip side is that after Ceausescu, Romania filled that void with mass poverty, homelessness, emigration for work leaving the old people at home. Now their agriculture is decimated as there isn’t the money in it or family members to farm the family land any more. This results in more food imports, the prices go up, more people have less…. It’s not as easy as get rid of this regime & go to…. What? The American model is hardly the kind of thing that you want to replicate - people going bankrupt over healthcare? Justice depends on income? Homelessness? I’ve been to Romania albeit for a short time as an official and even the Govt officials were wary of us & they were working with us. The regular people, some were friendly some were not. My driver was incredibly formal; he met me at the airport at 4am, no talking once in the car, no carrying my own luggage, he checked me in at the hotel, the hotel staff practically bowed…. Not coming from that kind of environment I found it very strange but equally I was expecting to behave in a certain manner also…. Maybe that is all too much info but if Putin goes it will leave a vacuum and that can mean (as in some other counties) that the replacement is *worse* …..

that kind of thinking basically blames people for 'letting' dictatorships happen. like robert kennedy jr. implying that jews could easily cross over into switzerland during the war, as if the 6 million that got killed only did so beecuase they hadn't thought of that. the only reason romanians were able to topple ceaușescu is because it was 1989 and the soviet union was on the verge of collapse, and ceaușescu's repression had become such that there were extreme shortages, and he'd let relations with his allies - even the soviets - deteriorate, so he was in a position of weakness. it's not like people suddenly realised that if they 'united' they could get rid of the guy who until that point had been the most repressive communist regime in europe. basically, it was only because he was vulnerable and his hold on power weakened that people were able to overthrow him.

Everybody knows Russia is a free country with fair and open elections, no limits to freedom of speech or cultural expression, a warm and open society that welcomes everybody no matter what race, gender, sexual preference or opinion. And so is China and so were all the countries behind the Iron Curtain (which was a figment of western imagination as everybody knows). And of course the whole Kim Dynasty in North Korea was loved by the population. That's why the posters of all great leaders of such countries are the highest sold and grace all the walls of all private and public buildings. Because it is what those free people want! Stick to the obvious facts, people!

I think HWBL is saying that she already knows that Putin is pretty well ensconced in his fortified bunker, like the usual megalomaniacal leaders. In all honesty, Putin is more likely to be taken out via Operation Valkyrie or something. I mean, a billionaire is only going to watch their fortunes whittle down for so long...

Let us have our fantasies. My personal favourite is Putin ending up like Julius Caesar on the ides of March. It doesn't mean I think it will actually happen.

If he keeps messing with those billionaires' money, the Ides of March might happen.
Even better would be if his personal guard locked him in his bunker, cut all power and communications, and just let him smother.
