Fuck. The US, UK, France, etc warning their nationals to get out of Ukraine and that they won’t send anyone to rescue them if they get trapped. They think an invasion could be imminent. This is potentially huge. It's very scary. My daughter-in-law (R) is from Tatarstan which is 2000 miles away from Ukraine, but she and her family are still jittery, of course. On a personal level the whole family is concerned about the Green Card approval R has been waiting for - I don't know how or even if it would have an impact, but the process is unending even without the potential horror of war between Russia and an "almost NATO member."

putin's drawing his red lines. he knows he lost most of eastern europe with NATO and the EU's eastward expansion but he's not losing ukraine, or at the very least he's preventing it from joining NATO and going fully pro west.

Evidence suggests Russia is planning "the biggest war in Europe since 1945", Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said. He told the BBC's Sophie Raworth in an interview: "All the signs are that the plan has already in some senses begun." Intelligence suggests Russia intends to launch an invasion that will encircle Ukrainian capital Kyiv, Mr Johnson said. "People need to understand the sheer cost in human life that could entail," he said. The prime minister was speaking from Munich, where world leaders are meeting for an annual security conference. The latest estimates by the US government suggests the number of Russian troops now stationed along Ukraine's border, both in Russia and neighbouring Belarus, is between 169,000 and 190,000. Ukraine: How big is the Russian military build-up?UK vows to step up support for UkraineUkraine invasion would shock the world - PM Western officials have warned in recent weeks that Russia could be preparing to invade at any time, but Russia has denied the claims, saying troops are conducting military exercises in the region. Asked whether a Russian invasion is still thought to be imminent, Mr Johnson said: "I'm afraid that that is what the evidence points to, there's no burnishing it. "The fact is that all the signs are that the plan has already in some senses begun." Mr Johnson was speaking after meeting with Western leaders and the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The full interview will be broadcast on BBC One's Sunday Morning programme at 09:00 GMT. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-60448162

Ukraine crisis: Russia orders troops into rebel-held regionsRussian President Vladimir Putin has ordered troops into two rebel-held regions in eastern Ukraine, after recognising them as independent states. Footage released overnight appeared to show Russian military vehicles heading towards the Ukrainian border. Russia said the troops would be "peacekeeping" in the breakaway regions, which it has backed since 2014. But the US said calling them peacekeepers was "nonsense". It accused Russia of creating a pretext for war. Ukraine's president said his country was "not afraid of anything or anyone". In a late-night televised address to the nation, President Volodymyr Zelensky called for "clear and effective actions of support" from Ukraine's international allies. "It is very important to see now who our real friend and partner is, and who will continue to scare the Russian Federation with words only," he added. Several countries, including the UK, are expected to introduce sanctions against Russia in response to the move. www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-60468237

^^^^ how? as long as he has nukes the west is fucked and can't do anything really definitive about him. and as long as europeans (and others) depend on russian gas, he knows he kind of has them by the balls. and then there's the whole issue of NATO's over reliance on US troops and the fact that the US is less war-hungry now than it has been for as long as i can remember... it's a shitshow.

Yes, that’s why I wrote “should”. He knows he can pretty much do what he wants now by threatening to start WW3.

I've been feeling angry and depressed about this all day. Imagine being a resident of Ukraine and having to pack up your life and flee for the border. Or feeling like you don't even have any choice but to stay and live in fear.

I'm going to hope that Putin gets overthrown, sooner rather than later. It's happened before there and this could cause another Russian revolution with him being the loser. It's not 1945 anymore or even the old Cold War era. I'm no history expert but it seems that most of the former Soviet states welcomed being free of Communism.

Don't shoot me, but I find myself wondering if Putin would have invaded if Trump was still President. Trump, Putin & Kim Jong-un share a narcissistic psychopathy that may have created some checks and balances on aggression.
Or, to put it more bluntly - would Putin have thought Trump was nuts enough to clap back militarily in a way that Biden won't and would this have stayed his hand?
