I think there was a logical reason why dogs are considered impure in the Koran - probably back then dogs had rabies or fleas or were wild and violent or some other thing that made them dangerous. Kind of how Christians wear blended fabric, I think it fell to the wayside by many Muslims. I believe in the Koran it does say, with the exception of black dogs specifically, that you shouldn't harm animals. I don't remember the specifics. Art depicting humans or any other animate beings is also not allowed, too, but that doesn't stop anyone from having them. Regardless, this has nothing to do with religion so much as it has to do with power, control, and despotism.
