I know this isn't exactly health and fitness, but I thought this fit best.
I'm trying to change up my make-up routine a bit, feeling quite blah. As I'm older (56) and do have some sun spots and a little redness on my face, I was wondering about trying a CC cream -- anyone with any experience with them?
Also, I don't usually use a primer, but keep reading how important they are... again -- any recommendations?
What do you consider your make up essentials -- the products you can't live without?

What with masks and the pandemic I quit wearing makeup (I never wore very much anyway) and simplified skin care to a moisturizer and soap. Saves me time and money, I'm 70 and less is more.

I keep seeing ads for Perbelle CC cream, aimed at the 50+ crowd it seems. Starts off white, changes color to match your skin. Not supposed to feel as heavy as foundation, just enough to even out dark spots, undereye darkness etc. I'm curious but haven't tried it myself.
I tried that Ilia skin tint makeup, but it feels pretty oily to me and people complain it oxidizes to darker colors. I tend to have a warmer, darker complexion so this isn't such an issue for me, still, the feel of it on my skin is heavy and I don't reach for it daily.
What I do try to do daily is just sunscreen, Paula's Choice Youth Extending Fluid spf 50 feels really nice and dries as matte as anything I've tried. It works as my moisturizer since I rarely have time for that, I tend toward oily/sweaty skin and my pores clog with all moisturizers I've tried to use daily.
*I forgot! I've recently been trying Yves St Laurent touche eclat brightening pen--this is NOT the same as the concealer pen, which is what I think I was going for and ordered the wrong thing. The brightening pen is meant to have a highlighter effect, not the coverage of concealer. But I've been using it anyway and it is a really, really nice formula. I chose a shade that matches my skin tone pretty perfectly and it is great, I just use it over my sunscreen, no other makeup required. Creamy, doesn't crease, the pen applicator is just right and doesn't waste product--overall, it's just MILES better than all the other cheaper concealers I've amassed. It's not cheap ($38) but I want to get the concealer pen too and see the difference.

Just to dote on Paula's Choice for a minute, their 2% BHA Exfoliant liquid is one of the best skincare products I've ever used (and I used to be a subscription box junkie so I've used A LOT).
IT Cosmetics CC cream is fantastic and in general one of the best make up bases I've used, it's pretty expensive though. I've yet to find a drug store CC cream that I really like, but I do like Maybelline's BB cream.
I can't be bothered with primers, they always break me out with regular use. I keep one on hand for like important full face make up events but I'm not loyal to any particular brand.

I use a mix of the Ordinary products as they are really inexpensive and it's great to find out what product works for you without losing a lot of money in the process (I love their retinoid serum which costs around 8.-, their peeling solution (aha 30% + bha 2%) and their vitamin c. I also use their make-up, very light-weight and you don't feel like you are wearing any make-up at all.) and Nuxe products, like the crème fraîche moisturiser, and the very rose line for de-make-up.
I also like the store-brand catrice, they have great mascara. Honestly, I bought very expensive mascaras in my life, and none was better.
For lips I don't have a favourite brand, but I can recommend the Rihanna Fenty lipstick line. Their colour holds forever. I wore the red one on my wedding day and I only re-applied once. It's called Lip Paint Longwear Fluid Lip Colour.

I forgot the primer mention, I don't like the feel of silicones on my face. Where others say it feels silky, it tends to feel oily to me, and if I start sweating it's an absolute oil slick feel. BUT I noticed that when I use Supergoop's Unseen Screen--spf 40 with no tint, just primer consistency--my skin looks SO good in photos. Blurs skin imperfections like photoshop. |

Just to add on to what some others have said here:
Since Covid, I almost never wear foundation because it's a waste of time & $ because of wearing a mask.
But I do like Clinique's Beyond Perfecting Foundation + Concealer. It hides everything! I have melasma & a couple of broken capillaries in my face that I HATE & it covers them completely (except for one really dark broken cap, but it covers it to the point I can deal with it). A little goes a long way, so I don't use much.
If I'm doing a bare minimum on my makeup, I'll use Supergoop's Glow Screen. I love this stuff so much! It gives my skin a nice "glow". It really does what it says!
Mascara - I've tried so many but I always go back to L'oreal Voluminous. Best mascara & very reasonably priced, since it's a drugstore mascara.
Moisturizer - I use the Jason Vitamin E Moisturizer & I add some Jason Vitamin E Oil to it sometimes as well (mostly at night). I absolutely love this stuff! Cheap & it works great. You can get it on Amazon or Walmart, or a health food store (which is where I originally discovered it)
Cleanser - I normally use Olay Sensitive Skin, but if I feel like splurging, I'll buy Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel.
I use Obagi retinol cream occasionally during the winter. Never during the summer because I'm outside too much.
ITA about The Ordinary products! They are really good & very affordable. I have used a few of their products, including the peel mentioned upthread & no complaints.
Lip products - I use all different brands of lipstick. I'm not really loyal to any particular brand. But again, with masks, I've mostly used lip balm. And I always apply lip balm at night as well.

I use Australian Gold botanical tinted face sunscreen. It’s cruelty free, SPF50, doesn’t turn orange on me, and the “fair” shade is just the right tint for my pinkish pale skin. It has light coverage, kind of evens out the complexion and is buildable on problem areas. And it’s pretty affordable. Other stuff I use: Inky List Oat Cleanser. One of the few that don’t dry my face out. I also use - and like- The Ordinary Buffet, Niacinamide and Zinc, and Hylamide Subq. Looks like I’m in good company. Tretinoin every other night, topped with either Acure Radically Rejuvenating Whipped Night Cream or Acure Ultra Hydrating Overnight Dream Cream. And when my skin gets really dry, I use Klairs Rich Moist Soothing Cream. For lips, I recently started using Jouer Essential Lip Enhancer Treatment, not impressed so far. Geez, that’s a lot of stuff! And here I thought I was low maintenance.  |

I've simplified and lowered the cost of my "beauty" regime. I use Aveeno Positively Radiant moisturizer (any serum or silicone based products make me break out), Clinique Even Better Glow (SPF15), Elf eyebrow pencil, L'Oreal Super Slim liquid eyeliner, and finally, two mascaras (at the same time!) - Covergirl Exhibitionist and L'Oreal Voluminous. I recently splurged on a Tarte Shape Tape concealer, but don't think I've used it yet.
I also have a long-forgotten brand of blush and a couple of Rimmel lipsticks in bruised berry shades.
My splurge...Wei mud mask. Beautiful packaging and feels like a real indulgence.
Also, I am 61 so my routine is mostly to prevent itching or scaring small kids and old folks.

I have had the absolute best luck with the Naturium line is products. I use their Hyaluronic acid, Vitamin C, and Niacinimide serums daily and my skin has never looked better. I follow a few skincare influencers on instagram and they all recommended this brand. I like that nothing is over $25.
I'm also using the La Roche Posay Toleraine cleanser and this is so nice.
I'm on the hunt for a really good face sunscreen that doesn't leave a white cast and isn't crazy expensive and doesn't leave me looking greasy. I'm super fair and need to wear sunscreen daily.

Since Covid I mostly stopped wearing foundation and lipstick because of the mask. I still wear eyeliner and mascara with the mask. Cover Girl has a vegan mascara that works as good as any other kind. It's Lash Blast Volume mascara and I get it on Amazon Prime for about $6. I've used vegan mascaras before that were expensive and truly sucked. One had the texture of black paintbrush water and the wand was real small. Fuckers. I do miss lipstick. Since I can't wear lipstick all the time, I now apply Hurraw! mint lip balm, I can wear that under the mask. |

It blends in perfectly to your skin, with no weird cast, and takes away redness like magic. I LURVE it. I pretty much gave up wearing foundation completely, just an occasion dab for more coverage, or just concealer. It has SPF 25 too!!

I pretty much gave up wearing foundation completely, just an occasion dab for more coverage, or just concealer. It has SPF 25 too!! Hi Manx - I’m really interested in this - do you know if it’s the “CC RED CORRECT” or one of the other products please? I recently splurged & ordered some PETER THOMAS ROTH INSTANT FIRMX EYE I’d seen an ad & thought “no way” but getting it from a £-back place if not happy. I used it yesterday for the first time in the house & thought “yeah ok” I washed it off & popped a touch more on under my make up before I went out & I’m very impressed. I have puffy upper eyes & would certainly have ps if I could find somewhere & afford it. This will do in the mean time. |
