Not really cool, but rather amazing: Just noticed this thread! This graphic is amazing. Is Redd Foxx really 48 there??? (I just read that he wore makeup to appear older on Sanford & Son.) I feel like there was no vanity for middle-aged people in the 1970's. Last week "Poseidon Adventure" was on cable, and I was telling the kids and Mrs Mo that she is now several years older than Shelley Winters was when she played the elderly grandma in the movie.

I feel like there was no vanity for middle-aged people in the 1970's. Last week "Poseidon Adventure" was on cable, and I was telling the kids and Mrs Mo that she is now several years older than Shelley Winters was when she played the elderly grandma in the movie. I checked it for you and indeed, it is a little off here and there. From left to right, top row: Redd Foxx (1922-1991, passed away aged 68). Sanford & Son ran from 1972-1977, so he was 50 when it started. Carroll O'Connor (1924-2001, passed away aged 76). All in the family ran from 1971-1979, so he was around 47 when it started. Wilford Brimley (1934-2020, passed away aged 85). Checking his photos on IMDB makes me realize he mostly played parts in which he wore similar hats as in this photo, LOL, so this one looks most like one he wore in Cocoon in 1985, which would make him 50 or 51. Norman Fell (1924-1998, passed away aged 74). Picture is from Three's Company which ran from 1976-1984, but he only starred in it until 1982. So, he was 53 in the first season. Bottom row, ltr: Polly Holliday (1937). Picture from Alice which ran from 1976-1985; she starred in it until 1980. Was 39 in the first season. Ann B. Davis (1926-2014, passed away aged 88). The Brady Bunch ran from 1969-1974, she was 43 in the first season. Jean Stapleton (1923-2013, passed away aged 90). All in the family ran from 1971-1979, so she was around 48 in the first season. Rue McClanahan (1934-2010, passed away aged 76). The Golden Girls ran from 1985-1992. This publicity shot is from 1985, so she was indeed 51.

It’s so wild how people jut a couple of decades ago looked sooooo”middle aged old” when they were barely in their 30s or 40s. Maybe I only feel that because it’s not my generation, but my mum for example, had such a “mum” look at 30, with her full baby face, it mad he look so much olde than she was Like Polly Holliday, she’s 39 on that picture??? She looks a full decade older

She looks a full decade older This has always been a topic of fascination to me. With these pictures and the apparent age - it's a combination. The hair, the clothes, the general weight level.
My parents came from a generation where you did athletics and dressed fashionably either because you were in school, or were looking for a partner, or were a (young) movie star. Then, after that, you just schlubbed out and stopped caring. When I was in college, I still lived with my parents, and I had weightlifting equipment and would run about to 6 miles several times a week. My dad didn't get that at all. He was like, "What's the point? You aren't on your school's running team." But even then, I was reading articles that said, exercising and eating regularly could slow down the aging process for you. I think there has been a sea change in terms of attitudes about what you should be doing (nutrition, exercise, and cosmetics/clothing) as you get older.

I like pics where they put "modern" hair on all the ladies to show how much younger they look with the right styling

Good Lord some of them are my daughter's age and no way does she look that old! Betty White is a stunner with a modern hairstyle.
