Just watched Damsel (shut up, it was raining and I had nothing to do) which was kind of entertaining, with Milly Bobby Brown as a medieval Buffy-style dragon hunter (not by choice). It's fun and well made, but she spends 3/4 of the movie underground. Also binged season 3 of Girls5eva - that show makes me laugh out loud. I hope there's a season 4. So - recommended? Has anyone seen any of Fallout yet?

Lucky, Harry Dean Stanton’s next-to-last movie about an old guy who lives in a small desert town. Not much happens, but it was so good. I think I saw that but have to check. Loved him. The Law According to Lydia Poet. Well Nov, that has my name written all over it. Thanks! I'm a hugely enormously majorly fan of Rufus Sewell but I don't really wanna see him as Randy Andy but I will I guess. (Netflix) Will watch Middlemarch with him free on Tubi. English period series from the 90's. As he got older his one eye got more normal or he had it fixed. I watched the 1994 Little Women with that great cast. Was talking with my godson who is 31, and was telling him about the young actors that I really know and like. I said Chalamet, Saorise Ronan and Florence Pugh. He said well then you have to see their remake of Little Women. What? What? All in one movie? Can't wait.

Rufus Sewell, loved him in “Victoria”. She should have ended up with him, instead of emo Albert! 😁

Seeing as though I've spent a lot of time in bed this week I've been on a constant Netflix costume drama binge and have worked through: Sense and Sensibility (1995). Reliable and solid and an easy way to pass a couple of hours. Needed more of Alan Rickman's gorgeous voice though. Pride and Prejudice (2005). Hated it. HAAAAAAAATED IT! Clunky, brown, disjointed, important characters reduced to window dressing and far, far too much Keira Knightley. She might be the name but she felt shoehorned into places she didn't need to be front and centre of. Persuasion (2022). I was prepared to go balls to the wall in my dislike of this but I was either hated-out after the Keira-fest or it wasn't as bad as I was expecting. The attempts at giving it modern quirks fell flat and made me think that they should have moved the whole lot into the modern day rather than forcing the modern day into the past, but it was passable. Bridgerton (series 1 & 2). Easy and undemanding candyfloss. Some lovely dresses and jewels. I watched it as a warm up for the soon-to-be-released season 3. The Law According to Lidia Poet is next up for a rewatch ( no1novice there's a second season supposed to be out later this year) but if anyone else has any Netflix costume drama recommendations (and I don't mind subtitles or decent dubbing) I'd love to hear them.

^There's one called The English Game which is about the growth of football (soccer) and the divide between the working class players and the toffs. I don't care for football but I really enjoyed the series.
If you can handle subtitles, The Cook of Castelamara is pretty good viewing.
I've just started an Italian series called Brigantes, which is good so far.

I watched it because it was late, I couldn't sleep and I didn't want anything that would require too much attention to a plot but I ended up enjoying it. no1novice if you like women taking care of themselves, dragons, and some well-deserved incineration then it's worth a look. ^There's one called The English Game which is about the growth of football (soccer) and the divide between the working class players and the toffs. Subtitles aren't a problem for me at all (which is just as well as I usually have them on permanently on the bedroom tv so I can keep the volume down but still follow the dialogue over a certain somebody's muttering, snorting and other ungodly sounds while he sleeps). I did start watching The Cook of Castelamara a while back, but I think I must have got distracted somehow and not remembered to carry it on after the first couple of episodes. Thanks for the reminder - I'll have to go back and finish it off.

i just finished 'barry'. what a fucking ride. bill hader is a genius and wrote, directed and starred in the whole thing but all the other actors and their characters are incredible too. i don't think i've been this utterly in awe of a show and someone's genius since 'fleabag'.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is pretty good, and 40’s costumey. The Dig late 30’s era, good movie Delicieux (delicious), french, subtitled, 1700’s. Pretty good, but I don’t know it it’s on netflix, but it’s on prime The Gilded Age gorgeous clothes galore, but on hbo and prime. I think you can get free trials for both.

I must say I LOVE the Joe Wright P&P, even if Keira Knightley is somewhat annoying in it, I just love that film. I HATED Persuasion though. Sorry but Dakota Johnson just looks like she owns an Iphone, she has that way too modern vibe about her, and I thought the writing was a shitshow. But I want that shirt she was wearing all the time, that was a good shirt XD You may want to watch Emma with Anya Taylor Joy, I was sceptical at her being cast in that role, but she really nails it, and the costumes, omg the costumes are a delight !!! I do second The Guernsey peel and potatoe whatever, that title is way too long but the film is cute, and the Gilded Age (solid costumes !) Every year, Bernadette Banner does a costume ranking of costume dramas, that video is a mine gold if you're looking for inspiration!

Pixie have you ever watched the 1995 miniseries of P&P? That really set the storytelling standard of the novel for me. But I guess I'm biased towards it in a slightly purist way because I've probably gone through several copies of the book after having read and reread them to pieces lol. And yes, I loved Dakota's shirt as well!

I must say I LOVE the Joe Wright P&P, even if Keira Knightley is somewhat annoying in it, I just love that film. I really didn't like this version, although I'll still watch it if it's on. I felt like the director never read the book properly - I saw an interview where he was saying that he wanted to show that the Bennets were poor, so they had the scenes with the pigs running through the house. But the Bennets were only poor in comparison to the Darcys and Bingleys - they had a comfortable lifestyle in the books. Plus some of the dialogue was very un-Austen, eg "Don't you dare judge me Lizzy!" and "smile for the gentleman, Jane" and "For once in your life, leave me alone!" Not to mention Mr Darcy raced through all his romantic speeches like he was about to miss his bus. And of course now I can't watch it without yelling "Wambsgans!" every time he's on screen. I'm with Kitty, I think the 1995 series was almost perfect. eta And the fact that they decided to set it 20 years earlier than it was supposed to be set - the fashions were all wrong, and I think the only reason they did it was so that they could put Judi Dench in a powdered wig.
